Must Have Kitchen Tools for Healthy Eating and Weight Loss

Healthy eating and weight loss or weight maintenance are difficult in our busy, rush-rush-rush society.  Over the past year, my husband and I have lost a combined weight of around 75 pounds.  While it certainly wasn't easy--there were a few must have kitchen tools and gadgets that we find necessary for healthy eating and weight loss.  The right tools make any job a little easier, right?

What are a few kitchen tools that make healthy eating and meal prep easier?

A Reusable Water Bottle
Water is essential to weight loss and proper health.  Water serves as an appetite suppressant, helps in fat metabolism, aids in kidney and liver function, keeps muscles contracting and functioning properly, and even helps relieve water retention. Really? Yes--dehydrated bodies enter a "survival mode" and actually retain water. Add a reusable water bottle to your kitchen tools and you may find yourself drinking more water and becoming more hydrated. We prefer eco-friendly, reusable bottles that are BPA free such as the stainless steel KOR Vida.
Measuring Cups and Spoons
You can only know the exact amount (and calories) of the ingredients in your homemade meals if you measure them accurately. A teaspoon of cooking oil is easy to overestimate by eyeballing it--but, even a little extra adds a lot of extra fat and calories to a dish.

A Digital Scale
Have trouble estimating 4 oz. of shredded chicken?  2 oz. of skim mozzarella cheese?  Take the guesswork out your portion sizes with a digital scale.  We like the Ozeri Digital Kitchen Scale.  It's easy to clean, measures effectively--and we like the way it looks since it's often on display on the kitchen counter.

A Cutting Board
Invest in a quality cutting board to use beneath the masses of fruits and vegetables that you will be chopping as you eat healthier and strive to lose weight.
A Good Set of Knives
Expect to cut a lot of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and more as you prepare healthy meals.  Invest in a good set of knives to make your cutting, chopping, and meal prep work easier.

A Good Set of Nonstick Cookware
Healthy eating and weight loss require kitchen time.  A good set of nonstick cookware will allow you to cook with less fats and oils--and enjoy easier cleanup.
Salad Plates
We tend to fill our plates--and clean our plates. When we use a standard dinner plate, our healthy portions seem pretty skimpy.  Trick your mind and fill up a salad plate or a dessert plate for dinner instead.

A Blender
You will find a blender very helpful in creating fresh, homemade salad dressings, soups, sauces, smoothies and more.  I use my blender daily these days. While you can certainly spend $$$$ on a heavy duty blender, I actually like this simple Hamilton Beach version for light, daily use.

Vegetable Steaming Basket
Steamed vegetables are frequent guests on our menu--and a steaming basket allows the veggies to keep their flavor and texture during cooking.

Storage Containers
I find it so much easier to eat healthy meals and keep my eye on my weight loss goals when I prepare several meals in advance. If my meals are prepared, or mostly prepared, I am much less likely to succumb to the convenience of takeout on a busy evening.  I try to plan for three days of meals (at least) with each kitchen prep session. This requires lots of food storage containers!  Take a look at BPA free containers--like these from Ikea--especially if you plan to use them in the microwave or dishwasher.

You may already have many of the must have kitchen tools and gadgets helpful for healthy eating and weight loss.  If so, put them to use!  If not--buying a few of the right kitchen tools will make eating healthier so much easier!

  1. Great post idea. I have a water bottle and most of those things including the scale which I don't use very often.
