90 Minutes In Heaven Book Review, Giveaway & Movie Release Spotlight

90 Minutes In Heaven, a film based on the bestselling novel by the same name, hits theaters on September 11, 2015.   We recently had the opportunity to both screen a scene from the film--and to review the book upon which the screenplay was based.  We are excited to both share our review of the book and to offer the opportunity for one reader to win a copy of the book in the giveaway at the end of this post.

We received a complimentary copy of this book for use in our blog review and access to a limited early screening of a portion of the film.  All opinions are our own.  While we were not compensated for this post, we may receive slight compensation from affiliate links throughout our site.

About the book:
Paperback; 245 pages
Pastor Don Piper died January 18, 1989 when a semi-tractor truck crushed his car. Declared dead by the first rescue workers to arrive on the scene, Don's body lay under a tarp for the next 90 minutes.  Don's soul, meanwhile, was experiencing love, joy, and life like he'd never known before.  Don was in Heaven.

When another pastor's prayers helped bring Don back to life, he became a living miracle! Yet this is one miracle Don wished never happened.  Heaven's bliss was replaced by excruciating pain and emotional turmoil.  With the support and prayers of his beloved Eva, their three kids, and friends near and far, Don clings to his faith in God and fights to regain a semblance of his previous life.  The Piper family's incredible true story of perseverance and overcoming the challenges of life - and death - will bring hope and encouragement to all who see it.

90 Minutes in Heaven was not the novel I had expected. I think I had expected more recounting of Piper's experiences in Heaven than I found in the book.  The book was more of a story of recovery and perseverance than a glimpse at Heaven.  Of course, the book is about Piper's 90 minutes in Heaven--just more toward the lasting impact of the brief experience on him and his family.

90 Minutes in Heaven is inspirational and thought provoking.  While the miraculous survival and peeks into Piper's experience with death were brief--the impacts of both weighed heavily on him as he struggled to recover from his injuries and find peace with his life.  As the author battles depression and physical and personal challenges stemming from his injuries--and from his experiences during his 90 minutes in Heaven--readers will be inspired by his faith-filled support system and his own soul-searching.

I am looking forward to the film version.  I was only able to watch the opening scene--but, I did feel that it held great promise to bring the emotional, inspirational story to life.

Would I recommend 90 Minutes in Heaven I have read so many skeptical comments related to the "real" nature of Piper's 90 minutes.  Whether you attribute his experiences to physiological trauma, hallucinations--or to an actual glimpse of Heaven.  Whether you accept his sharing of his story as a very personal bit of inspiration and light for Christians--or as a money-making opportunity--you will witness the effects and impacts of his experiences on his life.   Whether or not you accept Piper's 90 Minutes in Heaven; you will be inspired by the faith and courage of his support network, his difficult recovery from the accident, and, ultimately, of his own beliefs.
