My Review

The Wisdom of Listening is Motivational and Inspirational.  This book is another one of those books that I just seemed to find at the exact right time.  From feeling like I didn't quite (ever) fit into the boxes set out before me at any point of my life to struggling to find myself and achieve goals at various transitions--I was able to identify with the author's personal stories and discoveries.  I think this book and the author's tidbits of wisdom offered a lot to me as my daughters are growing up and life role is shifting (yet again).  The author reminds us that everyone has a story to tell--and we can truly learn something from anyone and everyone that we meet.  Reading her takeaways from various encounters and "listening" as she shared life experiences and her personal influences (and doubts and fears) made this novel very real and inspirational.  Each chapter is short and direct--but, the words will give readers some points to ponder long after reading them.  From start to finish, this book is encouraging and motivating for those finding their path in life--and starting down new paths or facing obstacles and challenges.

The Wisdom of Listening is a Down to Earth Self Help Book.  This book isn't a psychology textbook or a planned guide detailing lists of dos and don'ts toward personal transformation.  The author writes this in an easy to read, down to Earth, almost conversational format that readers can connect to easily.  We aren't reading case studies--we are reading the author's life story and those of the many people who have influenced and motivated her throughout her life.  The author shares "this was happening" and "I felt this"--and then she shares, quite honestly, the lessons and wisdom learned from the words and stories of someone she knew or someone she had interviewed and applies those lessons to her life at a given point.

Would I recommend The Wisdom of Listening by Marilyn R. Wilson?  I read this book during one evening--but, I plan to re-read it and use it as almost a daily journal prompt/starter.  I think readers could stop at the end of each chapter and reflect on Marilyn's story and the wisdom shared in the section--and focus on applying that wisdom to an aspect of their own life.  I think this novel is motivational and inspirational to anyone feeling stuck or doubtful on their life path--but, I think it is perfect for women (especially long-time stay at home moms) who find themselves at a point in life where family "needs" them less and they are ready to change direction or embark down a new path.  This book shows us that it is never too late (or too soon) to follow our dreams and face our fears--and it reminds us that we are not alone and can continuously learn from our environment if we take the time to listen.  I love the author's writing style and, again, would recommend this book to anyone feeling a little stuck in life.

Praise for The Wisdom of Listening

"Every life has a story and, no matter our background, we share similar hopes, dreams and fears. This book not only gives you insight into the varied lives of its subjects but, through Marilyn's reflections, shows how we each walk a similar spiritual path."
- Robbin Whachell, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Bahamas Weekly

"Marilyn shows us, through her compassionate and incisive interviews, how to grasp and link those golden moments, like sparkling prisms of light, into an animated and profound acceptance of ourselves, the people we encounter, the relationships we build, and the dreams that will set us free."
- Gabriella Contestabile, Author, Founder of Su Misura Sensory Journeys

“I was reminded we are collectively each walking our own paths, but often experience similar emotions, feelings, obstacles, challenges, triumphs, rewards and successes. We all learn as we go and we all become wiser as time passes. This is humanity. The diversity in each of us as a whole is awesome.”
