Will he grow for too long? Will Augie get to take his little brother home once he is born? Join August on this new, exciting adventure of getting a new little brother in a very unique way. If you are looking for a way to help your children understand that families can be created in many different ways, this is a story to keep on your bookshelf!

My Review

Mommy's Oven Helps Bring Understanding to a Difficult Topic. This book offers families a fantastic, simple way to explain the subject of surrogacy to young children. Pregnancy, in general, can be a confusing time for big brothers and sisters. It is even more challenging to understand when it doesn't fit the child's image from his limited experiences with new little siblings! The author gives a real-world way to explain the situation to a child in an easy to understand way.

Mommy's Oven Gives Families A Lot to Discuss. As little Augie moves through the story--he has some questions and concerns. While the author shows that the story has the ending that Augie wants and his fears subside--the concerns she brings up are ones that other children will likely have as well. The book opens the door for families to talk about their growing family and the unique fears in a child's mind.

Would I Recommend Mommy's Oven by Brandi Pearce?  The easy to read pages and vivid illustrations bring a complicated subject into a child's world. The illustrations help the child "see" the story and the characters as Augie's little brother becomes a part of his family. I would certainly recommend it to family's touched by surrogacy--but for those adopting as well. It is a beautiful way to help children understand that many birth stories vary in how parents welcome new children.

Meet the Author

Having battled Crohn’s Disease for most of her life and after undergoing 82 abdominal surgeries, Brandi Pearce knew she wouldn’t be able to carry children of her own. After a successful surrogacy resulted in her son, August, years later, she wondered how to explain to August that he was getting a new brother who was growing in someone else’s belly. That’s when Mommy’s Oven, Pearce’s debut children’s, book was born. Pearce wants other parents to be able to teach their own children that every family creation is unique and special. She hopes to inspire hope in overcoming adversity, as well as true miracles with this book.
