Easter Stories: Classic Tales for the Holy Season Book Review and Giveaway

By on 3/19/2015 08:49:00 AM

Easter will be here before we know it this year!  If you shy away from much of the holiday's commercialism, you may be seeking something a little more faith-filled to remind your family of the holiday's meaning.  We had the opportunity to read and review Easter Stories:  Classic Tales for the Holy Season--a collection of stories compiled from the works of several authors.  We are excited to share this book with you--and to offer you the chance to win a copy for your family at the end of this post.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in my review.  All opinions are my own.

Quick Summary of Easter Stories: Classic Tales for the Holy Season. Everyone who believes Easter is about more than Easter egg hunts will be grateful for this new anthology of short stories that illumine the true meaning of the season. Selected for their spiritual value and literary quality, these classic tales capture the spirit of Holy Week and Easter in a way that will captivate readers of all ages. Parents and grandparents will find that children love to hear these stories read aloud, year after year.

Easter Stories includes time-honored favorites from world-famous storytellers such as C.S. Lewis, Leo Tolstoy, Selma Lagerlof, Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Goudge, Maxim Gorky, Ruth Sawyer, Anton Chekhov, and Walter Wangerin – as well as many you’ve never heard before. Illustrated with original woodcuts.

This is a wonderful, family friendly story collection.   The girls and I have been reading a few stories from this book each night over the several days.  Each story offers a faith-filled lesson surrounding new life (or a changed life) through death, personal sacrifice, or an ending of some sort.   The stories are not focused on Easter as a holiday--but, on the Christian symbolism presented by the day and on Biblical stories.

The collection is best suited for older children.  While the collection is family friendly--it may not hold the interest of younger children.  Bear in mind that the writings featured in this book come from works by authors such as Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, and CS Lewis.  The texts are not simplistic and could certainly be a little long or heavy for younger children.  My 8 and 10 year old girls enjoyed reading the stories aloud and discussing them together.  Most of the stories in the collection are fairly short--making them an easy, family-friendly, storytime read.  I do think the stories are best read aloud and discussed as a family.

Would I recommend Easter Stories:  Classic Tales for the Holy Season?  This collection is filled with a variety of stories, pulled from a variety of authors--from modern times to the 1800's.  I do think the book is family friendly--but, for families with older children.  I would also recommend pre-reading the stories before sharing them with your children as some of the concepts may be difficult for some children or too lengthy.  I would certainly recommend this for anyone seeking to add stories of faith to the Easter holiday--whether sharing the stories as a family or reading alone.
