If you are one of the 50 million Americans impacted by allergies --you probably already know the importance of a clean home in eliminating those outdoor, seasonal allergens as well as common indoor air quality issues. While keeping windows closed and using an air conditioning system with quality filters are common for families dealing with allergies and asthma--there are a number of simple cleaning activities that may help as well. What are a few of Chem-Dry's expert tips for cleaning your indoor spaces this spring?
Change heating and air conditioning filters. Check filters regularly and replace them according to manufacturers instructions--or sooner if they become dirty or clogged. This helps prevent the air from circulating allergens throughout the home.
Allergy proof your bed. Cover pillows and mattresses with washable dust covers and use bedding that can be washed on a regular basis.
Replace your blinds. Window blinds are dust magnets that can be difficult to clean. Chem-Dry suggests replacing them with easier to clean window shades--or planning to wash the blinds weekly to keep them clean and dust free.
Keep pets clean. Bathe pets regularly--and keep them (and their pet dander) confined to certain areas of the home and out of your bedroom.
Keep carpets and rugs clean. Be sure to vacuum carpets and area rugs at least once a week to remove surface dirt and dust. Since vacuuming, even with HEPA filter equipped vacuums, misses deep down dirt and allergens such as dust mites, pet dander and bacteria--it is important to have your carpets deep cleaned by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year. If you have children and pets--2-3 annual carpet cleanings are advised. Consider using a company with fast-drying cleaning techniques, such as Chem-Dry. Fast-drying carpet and upholstery cleaning techniques help you avoid creating a mold and mildew breeding ground deep within your carpet!
Use door mats or area rugs in high-traffic areas and entry ways. Entry way rugs and mats act as the first "filters" for dirt, dust, and allergens entering the home on shoes, clothing and pets. Of course, once these "filters" catch incoming allergens and dirt--it is important to vacuum them regularly and have them professionally cleaned as well.
Keep upholstered furniture clean. The same dust, dirt and allergens found on your floors also find their way onto your furniture. Chem-Dry recommends vacuuming upholstered furniture every other week and scheduling a professional upholstery cleaning annually.
