Sprucing Up your Website

Your website is almost like a window to your world, think of it as the place where people will browse as they pass through and decide whether they want to stay and look inside for a while- just like a store on the high street. Sometimes you need to take the time to work on your website to make it look better, run better and attract a wider audience. Today we are going to talk about a few ways to do this.

Focus on one action

When someone clicks onto your website, what exactly is it that you want them to do?
Download an eBook?
Sign up for an email course?
Click through to blog content?
Purchase a product?

Make sure you have a specific purpose in mind when people click onto your landing page, because you can then focus on making this action top priority on the home page. Ideally you will want it somewhere at the top of the page with a clear message to persuade people to sign up to purchase. Make sure it stands out from the rest of the page with bright colours or a striking image.
Pick Readable Fonts

You may think that those fancy calligraphy fonts look great, but when you have them plastered all over your website it can be very difficult for people to read. Ideally you want to stick to anything which has the letters spaced out a little and the font a little rounded. A font such as Josefin is a great option because it isn’t too boxy and old-fashioned, but the letters are still clear and easy to read.

You want people to be interested in your website and want to find out more, and if they cannot read your text they won’t both clicking past the homepage. Make sure to also cut down the sizes of paragraphs to make them short and snappy.

Lots of headers

Break up the copy on your website with headers, just as we’ve done here with this post. Most of the time when people are reading, they are actually just skimming through. You need to make sure that you have those distinct splits in the text to make it easier for the reader to grasp what it is you are saying and they may see a header they are interested in and decide to read more. Companies such as Red Spot Web Design can help you change the layout of your website and give tips on what users want to help you make the optimal website.

Choose your colors

Color is a huge part of setting the scene for your website. You will see a stark difference between certain types of website and the colours you can make them to set the tone for your readers. For example, many DIY websites will go for bright, manly colours like blue, black and orange. This sets a harsh, no nonsense tone for the website which makes your brain ready for doing work. If you have a blog or a photography site you may want to look for a relaxing combination like white and pastel colours. You will be telling your readers to sit down and relax as they scroll through your site.

Images

An image speaks 1000 words; in this day and age the use of a compelling image is becoming even more crucial to the success of your website. People would much prefer to look at a photograph than read a paragraph, so try to incorporate images into your website at every opportunity. You can use stock images or even take photographs yourself if you are handy with a camera.
