The Werewolf Myth by Phaedra Seabolt
Werewolves in novels come from a lot of places, but you will find that a good majority of them have their roots in European myths. There are an abundance of myths and folklore to draw information from making it a little easier to come up with information for an author’s plot.

Originally I was going to base my werewolves on Celtic lore. I researched wars and men who had appeared across centuries in their myths in order to find someone suitable on which to base my oldest werewolf, Aren Erikson. What I found in my research was someone whom I thought could actually have been the inspiration for the “oldest werewolf” from one of my favorite authors. The name matched, the European background was as close as I could figure since the background of this particular werewolf is a very guarded secret. However, the similarities were strong enough that I scrapped all of my original research.

I decided instead to use myth that didn’t have a lot of information on werewolves. This would allow me the freedom to use what little information I could find and morph it to fit my story rather than fitting my story around the myth. This is why my story is based on Norse mythology. There are a lot of parallels to Greek myths which make it easy for my readers to get into, but so much information has been lost that there’s room for me to make my own. I hope that you find that what I have done makes for an interesting story and even sparks your own interest in the plethora of myths out there.
