One of the best things you can do for your dog is creating space and getting rid of the clutter. Dogs will not feel good in a crowded place, and if they have to share their corner with the vacuum cleaner and the mop they will feel anxious. They need a separate space that smells and feels like them. If you can create a small corner for them where they can rest after a long walk without being distracted, they will be grateful. In case you have a large back garden you might let your dog take care of their needs instead of asking for you to walk them. If you have two-legged kids as well, you might not always be able to take them for a walk on a demand. Similarly to a cat flap, a dog flap will not let cold or hot air in, but allow your pet to go in and out as you please. It is also a good idea to create an outdoor run for your dog with a shelter. Not all breeds are happy to stay in the house when you are busy cooking the dinner for the kids. If you want them to get enough exercise every day, you will want them to run around freely. Be sure that you teach your dog some basic commands before you create a run, or you might not be able to get them to come back in the room. Sometimes simply looking at the wildlife or having some breeze will make your dog happy.
Play Area
If your kids enjoy spending time with your dog and would like to regularly play, no matter what the weather is, you can create a dog play area. This can involve obstacles in the house, or simply enough space for the dog to run around. Nobody would like to spend their days in a cage, so you will have to let them explore and investigate their surroundings safely.
Separate Dog Feeding Station
It is also crucial that you keep the dog feeding station away from your dining room and kitchen. Your dog will need to know from the beginning that they have nothing to do at the table, and their food is delivered to the same place. It is not just that dog food can make your home smell bad, you will also have to think about the insects and pets it can attract.

If you want to help your older dog get on with life and stay mobile, chances are that you will need to change your flooring. A stone or shiny wooden floor is an enemy of an older dog that is suffering from arthritis or joint pain. If they are not as stable as they used to be, you will need to give them something to grab hold of to feel supported. A mat or a carpet will be good, but make sure that your floor is easy to clean, too.
