4 Green Living Tips for Families

Enjoying a green lifestyle is a goal set by lots of families. While it’s definitely trendy to be eco-friendly, the need for being green goes far beyond following the trends. Our Earth is calling for our grace and we need to help her. Being green as a family unit is a great way to have a positive impact. While you’re being more eco-friendly, you’re also teaching new generations green habits which they’ll hopefully carry with them throughout adulthood. Living sustainably as a family may seem hard in the beginning, but with our tips, it will be a child’s play.

  1. Be inclusive of all

If your main objective is living a sustainable family life it is very important to not leave anyone out. When the whole family is included, the impact your actions have are much greater than individual ones. It is also important to teach your kids about sustainable living and the motivations behind such radical changes. Another idea is to make a little network with your family friends and neighbors and try to get them on board with eco-lifestyle. Your community can hold each other accountable, share ideas, and also stay motivated for further actions.
  1. Three Rs should be your mantra

Reduce. Repair. Recycle. The three Rs are the tenets of sustainable living which are very easy to understand and implement. Let’s start with the first R- Reduce. It’s pretty straightforward - stop buying unnecessarily and buy smart in order to reduce the waste you produce as a family. For example, instead of buying $10 fast fashion swimwear every single summer season, invest in some quality long-lasting sustainable swimwear. In the long run, it will save you money, while also reducing your waste by a lot. Repair is the second R. It urges you to repair the items you already own so you could keep them from the landfills longer. Recycle is the last, and probably most famous R. Separate your waste and take it to local recycling plants. If you’re having trouble motivating yourself to separate your waste, you can turn it into an activity for the whole family.
  1. Save energy and water

Many people forget that green living does not only consist of buying eco-friendly products and recycling. One of the key aspects of sustainable living is preserving all of our resources and that includes our energy and water supplies too. For example, teach your youngsters to turn off the lights the moment they exit the room. You may need to relearn this as well, it’s a tough habit to break! Once your lightbulbs break switch them out with LED bulbs which are known to use up less energy. When it comes to saving water if you have very young kids, have them take baths together. Also, learn to turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. We tend to be very mindless about little things like these, but they can truly add up and negatively affect the environment. There’s also one additional benefit to being mindful about water and energy consumption - your bills will definitely be significantly lower the following month!
  1. Purchase reusable travel mugs and water bottles

If you don’t have them already, getting these items is a great first step towards eco-living. Disregarding water bottles and coffee cups is something a lot of people do every day which results in a big chunk of waste that is entirely and easily avoidable! Take your kids shopping with you and let them choose the bottles they’ll carry to school every day. If you get your coffee on the go having a cute travel mug is a must. It’s also good to know that some coffee places will give you a discount if you come with your own mug!

About the Book

It’s Halloween time in the land of Harmony, and the Bobos Babes are ready for some fun!

When Angel Scarlett, Fairy Cora, and Princess Daphne visit Lily the Ladybug’s Boutique to look for Halloween costumes, they find Lily has left aside three special masks for them. The ladybug informs the sisters that they must wait until noon on Halloween to try on the mysterious masks but assures them they will have the best costumes in all of the land of Harmony.

The sisters can hardly wait, counting down the minutes on Halloween until they can don their curious masks. When the time comes, they learn their secret masks are enchanted, and the girls are magically transformed into the costumes of their dreams.

After a fun outing Trick-or-Treating, the little monster, witch, and ghost — or sisters — agree that this was the best Halloween of all.

My Review

Fun Halloween story for little ones. The author does a wonderful job capturing the magic of Halloween that children love so much!  The beauty of fall--and the excitement and wonder of choosing the right costume (and being unrecognized by friends) are presented through a fun story with adorable illustrations.  Little readers will be quick to imagine and remember the fun and giggles of a fun Halloween trick or treat adventure.

Costumes, Magic, Trick or Treat and Memory Making.  I think my favorite part of the story was at the end, when the sisters ended their evening with memories and giggles.  Parents will love the thought of their own little ones enjoying Halloween festivities--and kids will love the anticipation that the book brings.

Would I recommend Bobos Babes Adventures:  A Magical Halloween by Karen M. Bobos?  The book offers a cute story, perfect for exciting children with a magical adventure before Halloween.  I would recommend it to families with preschool/younger elementary-aged children.  Some of the pages are a bit long--and some of the rhymes are a little choppy and do not flow easily for young readers--so it may take a couple of read-throughs to get the flow.  All in all, it is a fun story and a great continuation of the series.

My Review

Fun Children's Book For the Holiday Season. This cute little story follows Chipper the Fox as he tries to bring some cheer and happiness to his forest friends. While Chipper gets off to a rocky start with a couple of his gift ideas--his heart proves to be in the right place. Reminding me of the illustrations in Jan Brett stories with a bit of the Little Bear series charm, I found myself smiling at Chipper's story and rooting for a well-deserved happy ending.

Would I recommend Chipper Makes Merry by Kimber Fox Morgan?
This is a fun story for young readers to read alone or share as a family or class. Readers will be treated with quick, easy to read pages and lovely illustrations--and a positive story. It reminds us a bit of the true nature of giving and kindness. It is the perfect read for the holiday season.

About the Author

Morgan is a fun wife, and imperfect mom of 3 crazy kiddos and 2 little lemon (problematic) dogs. She tries to live her strengths the best she can. She likes to say she is creative, not crafty. Morgan is a homemade Halloween costume type of mom. She lets her kids mix the play doh. She bakes fun birthday cakes (cutely, but far from perfection). She loves a homemade valentine and a school project. Chipper the Fox is an extension of Morgan's creative strength. Originally designed as character to create merry during the holiday season, Chipper has grown and developed into a story of determination and love.

Cerebral Palsy A Story Finding the Calm After the Storm Book Review and Book Tour Giveaway

Yesterday, I shared a review of a self-help book that seeks to explain the values and healing benefits of living a spiritual life.  Spirituality, Healing and Me by Ilana Estelle.  Today, I have an earlier book from Ilana to share!  This one is more of a memoir blended with a self help book that tells the story of her Cerebral Palsy diagnosis and life.  Check out my thoughts on Cerebral Palsy--A Story Finding the Calm After the Storm, learn about the author and her latest book--and be sure to enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post.

Book Title Cerebral Palsy: 'A Story' Finding the Calm After the Storm
Author:  Ilana Estelle
Category:  Adult Non-Fiction, 288 pages
Genre:  memoir
Publisher:  RedDoor Press
Release date:  Feb 1, 2020
Format available for review:  ebook (mobi for kindle)
Tour dates:  Sept 20 to Oct 8
Content Rating:  G.

About the Book

Living with cerebral palsy is enormously difficult. But what if you never knew you had it? This is the incredible story of Ilana Estelle.

Born the second of premature twins, from a young age Ilana knew she was different, but for all the wrong reasons. A child of the 60s, Ilana experienced first-hand the way that disability was so often brushed under the carpet and not spoken about. Her constant physical and mental struggles made her feel isolated, alone, frustrated, and misunderstood… it took 46 years for her to find out why.

Part memoir, part motivational guide, Cerebral Palsy: A Story is Ilana’s open and honest journey from an angry, confused child, knowing something was wrong, but not knowing what, to the ‘real’ her – a courageous woman using her experiences and lessons to create inspiring messages about mental and physical health, positivity, resilience and change.

My Review

Author Shares Her Challenging Story. The author writes much of this book as a memoir to share her experiences with an adult diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy. Having said that, she turns more of the book into an inspirational guide that has moved her journey toward healing and emotional recovery from the long-term impacts of the masking and hiding of her disabilities during her early years. Readers will find a touching story as the author shares reflections on her anger, confusion, depression, feelings of failure, and loss, along with her efforts to find the positives and motivations from various sources to direct her future better.

Ilana's Story is Not Just for Cerebral Palsy Patients and Families. Readers will find much advice, guidance, and inspiration in following the author from a very challenged child to an adult finding her path to success. Of course, the author's story could have been different had she had early support in treating her disabilities rather than ignoring and hiding them. Learning to adapt and summoning inspiration and inner strength led the author to and through her childhood and adulthood. She reached a point that allowed her to share her journey with others. Whether facing Cerebral Palsy, Autism, or other health or life conditions, many of us will be inspired and encouraged by Ilana's story.

Would I Recommend Cerebral Palsy A Story Finding the Calm After the Storm by Ilana Estelle?  I enjoy memoirs--especially those chronicling the life of one facing and overcoming challenges and setbacks. I didn't find this book as personal as some memoirs in that the author spoke of pieces of her past and present, but she didn't tell the whole story. Instead, she seemed to focus more on moving forward and finding her "calm" path to the future. Readers may not find many new motivational or inspirational ideas offered--but will learn ways she was able to apply such ideas to her own life and story. I would recommend reading this book to learn Ilana's story and follow it with Spirituality, Healing and Me for more insights and self-help inspiration.

My Review

Author Offers Simple, Bite-Sized Thoughts for Consideration. Each of the author's "chapters" or insights cover only a page or two--but she does a beautiful job giving readers thought-provoking considerations in every little section. From relationships and letting go to understanding forgiveness and fault, patience, and mindfulness to a bit of everything in between that we encounter in daily life--the author shares her experiences and backs up her views on the connections between spirituality and mental/physical health.

Spirituality, Healing and Me is not a Religious Guide. The author certainly notes that she doesn't view spirituality and religion as the same--or even inclusive or exclusive of one another. Ilana's views focus on the spirituality and forces of the Universe--but religious readers may find their parallels to God within many of the author's points and reflections.

Would I Recommend Spirituality, Healing and Me by Ilana Estelle?  While some parts of the book reiterate the author's thoughts and ideas--it never feels repetitive or "preachy." She simply offers different perspectives, examples, and views to encourage readers to self-reflect and recognize areas of life needing improvement. While it isn't a guidebook with directions for readers--it is a guidebook that offers readers views and experiences with suggestions and ideas that readers could incorporate into their daily life. If you are interested in exploring spirituality and its potential for healing in your life--this may be a great starting point for your journey.

My Review

The author offers an interesting and insightful look at our world.  It took some time for me to settle into the book.  The author spent much time making her case for change--and the cause and effect relationships our actions and activities have on others and the world as a whole.  It seemed a bit redundant early on--but, once the author explained her views on the chaos that has overtaken the world and the relationships and connections that both hurt (and remedy) the situations--the book began to take shape and the self-help aspect naturally emerged.  Heartsong offered an interesting view of chaos--and insightful notes to provoke thought and self-reflection in her readers.

Many of Us Seek Change.  The past year gave many of us time to reflect on our lives--leading many to realize that the paths taken were not fulfilling.   While we often know that a change is needed, we are often uncertain that any true change can be realized.    As the author explains our personal relationship to the world--the idea of small, personal changes becomes empowering toward larger changes and "fixes".  Through examples and suggestions for exercises and actions--the author gives readers not only an understanding of the problem faced--but, realistic, actionable changes the reader could make in his or her life.

Would I Recommend Humanity's Cry for Change? For those seeking thought-provoking, motivational activities and ideas to move toward more mindful, positive living--this book is certainly worth the read.  Be a little patient as the author develops her ideas--the actions and exercises are helpful and insightful.  It is a great starting point for those feeling stuck and weighed down by the happenings of the world!
