Book Review: Choosing Him All Over Again by Juana Mikels

Maintaining a marriage is difficult in and of itself!  When we factor in the many outside stressors and influences swirling about our modern worlds on a minute by minute basis--it is so easy to see how so many lose sight of the importance of a solid relationship with our spouses.  Whether work or outside commitments overtake priority--or our children move into those number one spots--our marriage is central to our family and to our life.

I was excited to read and review Choosing Him all Over Again:  A Story of Romance and Redemption by Juana Mikels. What did I think of Juana Mikels' book?

This post is part of the Choosing Him Blog Tour.  I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in my review.  All opinions and experiences are my own.

Summary of Choosing Him All Over Again:  A Story of Romance and Redemption.  A handsome husband, a dream job, and plenty of money- so why wasn't Juana Mikels happy? In a desperate attempt to find the peace and happiness she craved Mikels left it all behind. In Choosing Him All Over Again: A Story of Romance & Redemption, (Ambassador International; January 2014; $14.99, paperback) Mikels offers an intimate account of her search for Mr. Right, a journey that ended up leading her into the arms of Jesus, and ultimately back home to her husband.

Mikels not only includes a candid recount of her own marriage struggles in Choosing Him All Over Again, but she interviewed more than 40 people, all of whom had been separated or divorced at one time. "It is my prayer that you will be encouraged and able to love your husband and to choose him again," writes Mikels. "It is my delight to share my history with you because my story is a story of God's grace."

Choosing Him All Over Again includes strikingly honest accounts of Mikels' personal experience of separation from her husband and their ultimate reconciliation. Mikels offers wives 11 checkpoints for refreshing any marriage including saying 'I love you' daily, not bringing up past failures and praying for your husband every day. The book provides free resources like prayers Mikels prays for her husband, a note to Christian women married to unbelievers or married to Christian men who are not acting as believers should act, and access to a FREE downloadable companion Bible study guide

My thoughts on Choosing Him All Over Again.  I loved Juana Mikels' honesty--even when that honesty didn't necessarily set her in a favorable light.  This book is about growth, soul searching, faith and redemption.  While Mikels' views on every aspect of marriage are not really my own--she offers a very valuable resource in the sharing of her, very personal story.  When there is something "missing" in a relationship--it may not be something wrong with the relationship between the partners; but, simply something missing in a life without faith.  Juana Mikels' story wonderfully illustrates the value and importance of faith to a successful marriage.

"Juana writes from her heart as she exposes her journey of marriage brokenness and reconciliation, giving readers hope for their future and the motivation to embrace true intimacy with God. This story is captivating because Juana details her thoughts and emotions which led her to walk away from her marriage for a time—thoughts and emotions that many wives encounter daily. Her honesty and transparency is a rare treasure, allowing others the chance to relate and not feel so alone in marital struggles. Juana’s words are full of life-giving encouragement, just the kind of inspiration couples desperately need today.”
—JENNIFER SMITH, Author of The Unveiled Wife and Wife After God

What was my favorite part of Choosing Him All Over Again?  One of my favorite parts of the book was Mikels' Eleven Checkpoints to Refresh Your Marriage.  Even if you are currently struggling to find your path and your own faith in God is faltering; this chapter has some very valid points and reminders to refresh and strengthen any marriage.

Would I recommend Choosing Him All Over Again by Juana Mikels?  Nearly every marriage faces difficulties--no matter how strong or how faith-filled.  Stories from the heart--such as Juana's--offer so much hope and support for others struggling to find themselves and reconnect to their partner.   I do not agree with every point made by Mikels; however, I do feel that her experiences offer so much for those struggling through tough situations or marriage difficulties.  I would recommend this to Christian women seeking to put things into balance and re-prioritize busy lives and dreams and goals--while learning to maintain both a relationship with God and her spouse.
