Team Us: Marriage Together Book Review & Giveaway

Just as parenting manuals are not provided with new babies; successful marriage manuals are not delivered with our wedding vows. What seems so perfect and simple as newlyweds has a way of getting complicated once kids, careers, families and lives enter the game! I recently had the opportunity to read and review Team Us: Marriage Together by Ashleigh Slater. (You can even enter to win a copy of the book at the end of this post!)

She had me at the word "team"--because it requires a lot of teamwork and team building skills to make a marriage (and a family) work! What was my review of Ashleigh Slater's book, Team Us: Marriage Together?

I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in my review.  All opinions are my own.

Quick Summary of Team Us:  Marriage Together.  What are you agreeing to when you say “I do”? When a couple promises “I do,” they agree to more than just a shared last name, a joint bank account, and no more dateless nights. This husband and wife duo forms a new team. “Life together” becomes their mantra. Nothing can come between them. At least, that’s the plan. But then real life sets in. With it come disappointments and frustrations. If the couple isn’t intentional in their day-to-day interactions, that once enthusiastic “we” can slowly revert to “you” and “me.” Before long, the couple’s left wondering what happened to their team spirit.

Team Us: Marriage Together offers couples practical ways to cultivate and strengthen unity in their marriages. Author Ashleigh Slater shares from her own marriage as she presents couples with realistic ideas on how to foster cooperation, deepen commitment, and exercise grace on a daily basis.

"
 Team Us" Official Book Trailer

Ashleigh Slater takes a real look at marriage in Team Us:  Marriage Together.  The author invites readers into her own marriage's ups and downs--as well as those of other real-life couples. Team Us offers an honest look at the many, real-world, life circumstances and outside forces that make married life challenging.   Conflicts, job losses, parenting, friendships--and even simply learning to think and live as a "we" rather than as an "I" are all looked at throughout Slater's book through the eyes of the author, her husband, and other couples experiencing the challenges.

Team Us guides readers to live intentionally in their marriages.  Team Us:  Marriage Together is about more than recognizing the difficulties of marriage--it encourages readers to develop a game plan of intentional effort toward the marriage.  Marriages take work--and it takes a lot of small things....everyday...to make it work.  As the author moves through the various chapters of her own marriage with her readers, she offers "Us Time" questions at the end of each chapter.  These questions are intended for readers and their spouses to use to delve a little deeper into the chapter's content--and into their own marriages.

Would I recommend Team Us:  Marriage Together by Ashleigh Slater?  Sometimes we all need a little affirmation that we are not alone in our feelings, fears, and circumstances.  Reading through Ashleigh's book reminds readers of the importance--and necessity--of daily effort and team work in successful marriages.  While Team Us doesn't offer a guide to working through all of those difficulties--it does offer personal stories from real married couples facing--and conquering--real world relationship trials.  Slater writes in a very conversational, easy to read tone.  The book reads more as a diary than a traditional, self-help book.

While faith is important to the author's marriage and her life--she writes the book in such a way that non-Christians will also gain some useful marital insights. While it seems that newlyweds would have a lot to gain from these insights at the beginning--long-time married couples may actually need it a little more.  Even if all of the author's experiences are not reflected in your life--the reminders that marriage is a team sport help any married couple keep married life in perspective.
