Why Moms Make Great Entrepreneurs
Guest Post from Laura C. Cannon

Although you don't have to be a mom to have a successful business, you might find that being a mom gives you an edge as an entrepreneur. In fact, many of the skills you need to be an entrepreneur are things that you learn from being a mother. Here are just a few examples:

Multitasking – No one knows how to multitask better than a mom!  Modern parenting requires us to be able to do many, many things simultaneously, and that same skill pays huge dividends in business as well.  Being able to proceed on multiple tasks at once is a huge benefit to any entrepreneur.

Trusting your instincts – Even though we often joke that our mothers had eyes in the back of their heads, what they were really doing was relying on their instincts.  An experienced mother knows when a lie is being told, understands when homework is actually done right, and knows when Sally actually ate her vegetables as opposed to slipping them to the family dog.  Connecting to, and trusting, your instincts is a critical skill for entrepreneurs.

Handling change and impermanence – The only constant in life is change, and no one knows that better than a mother.  From last minute rescheduling of soccer practice, to coming home to chaos when your children decide to cook by themselves, to having to run to the store at midnight for school projects due the next morning, moms learn to roll with the punches.  Knowing that more change and chaos is right around the corner, and finding the strength and inner peace to handle it all, has massive benefits in the business world as well.

Being in service everyday – The most successful entrepreneurs are those that created their business to be in service to a community, a cause or a group.  Moms learn early on to give without the expectation of receiving, knowing that the best rewards are often intangible.  Sure, sticky kisses or a paycheck are great rewards, but the greatest reward is in the giving.

  1. Thank you for posting about Laura C. Cannon's new book The Conscious Entrepreneur on your blog. This book is chalk-full of fabulous take-away quotes. Here is one that feels timely:

"Bold people can often seem pushy or aggressive at times because of their level of commitment to their goals, but these are the people who change the world. They change society, they change the way we see the world, and that is why they are remembered and celebrated."
