Future Fortified Seeks Sustainable Nutrition for Millions

As a mom, there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching mothers throughout the world suffer losses of children due to malnutrition.  So many mothers worldwide take for granted basic nutritious foods that are not widely available in all areas of our world.  Many moms in the U.S. even have the luxury of worrying about hiding more fruits and vegetables in our recipes to make doubly-sure that our kids have the vitamins, minerals and nutrients to grow into strong, healthy children. I recently learned about Future Fortified and their efforts in ensuring that children have access to sustainable nutrient supplements in areas of the world where whole foods containing those vital nutrients are simply unavailable.  Who is Future Fortified, what do they do and how can you help?

Who is Future Fortified? Future Fortified is a health and wellness campaign enabled by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).  GAIN battles malnutrition in over 30 countries—reaching over 500 million people worldwide.  With the understanding that boosting adequate, especially for pregnant or nursing mothers and infants, has a way of boosting learning, social development, economic development and quality of life—GAIN seeks  to expand programs such as Future Fortified to aid one billion people worldwide through sustainable nutrition.

What is involved in the Future Fortifed program?  Future Fortified supports efforts to distribute sustainable nutrition packets to families in malnutrition stricken countries.  What are sustainable nutrition packets?  These are small packets of micro and macro nutrient supplements—which GAIN and Future Fortified seek to manufacture through local, sustainable resources—that offer families at risk of malnutrition the opportunity to add these nutrition packets to often limited, local food staples in an effort to achieve proper nutrition for area families.

Why should you get involved?  Nutrient packets essentially offer many of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that local farmers are able to produce in many areas of the world—but, are not accessible to everyone in every culture or every situation.  There may even be children in the U.S. who would benefit from such a supplemental program either now or in the near future.  Whether you are in a position to donate directly or simply speak out for Future Fortified—your involvement in the health, wellness and future of the world’s children is always worthwhile.
