Book Review: Crushing by Elena Dillon

It seems that I’ve been hooked on thrillers lately here in this little corner of the world!  I recently had the opportunity to read and review Crushing by Elena Dillon.  How did Crushing stand up to review?

A quick summary of Crushing by Elena Dillon.  High school senior, Aurora (Rory) Atherton, has the perfect life as the youngest child of affluent, loving parents.  The return of a childhood friend with a troubled past sets about a few changes in Rory’s life as she moves through her senior year.  As if coping with teenage drama, life and boys is not enough--Rory also finds herself caught up in the kidnapping of a school friend--and even seems to be a target of the kidnapper as well.

Crushing keeps action and drama alive from beginning to end.  Trouble seems to follow Dillon’s main character from page one.  While Rory is not malicious or, in any way, a trouble maker--her good intentions often lead to less than perfect results!  There is just enough suspense to keep readers guessing--and just enough twists and turns to leave readers “choosing sides” throughout the book.   Which love interest should Rory choose?  Who is the kidnapper?   Why Rory?

Crushing is intended for young adults--but, is a light, mild thriller for adults too.  Sometimes thrillers are a bit too graphic, too realistic and too disturbing for my overactive imagination!  Crushing reminded me of the Nancy Drew style mysteries that I read when I was younger--but, was written well enough that it kept my adult interest as well.

Would I recommend Crushing by Elena Dillon?  Yes--for young adults and grown ups seeking a light, well written thriller without a lot of graphic detail and shock factors.

About the author:
Elena lives and writes in a suburb North of Los Angeles.  She has never lived anywhere besides California which is probably a good thing since she hates being cold and is terrified to drive in the snow. She loves being a wife and a mother to her two kids and three dogs, although really the bulldog is the fourth child who has never matured beyond the toddler stage.

A self proclaimed nerd, she has been writing since she was a child. She has only recently, however, come out of the closet about this to her family and friends.  They now understand better, but not completely, why she talks about characters in stories as if they are real people.
