Book Review: Cache A Predator by Michelle Weidenbenner

I was recently asked to to review the dramatic thriller, Cache a Predator by Michelle Weidenbenner and participate in the book's promotional blog tour.  Crime dramas and psychological thrillers have dotted my summer reading list this year.  How did Cache a Predator stand up to review?

Quick summary of Cache a Predator.  Police officer Brett Reed rides an emotional roller coaster as he seeks to protect and gain custody of his five year old daughter, Quinn, from his drug and alcohol addicted ex-wife.  Reed became caught up in a nightmare after a judge granted the unfit mother custody of the girl--and even slapped Brett with a protective order and ordered him into anger management counseling.

Brett didn't think things could turn much worse until young Quinn was found abandoned on the street--and was placed into temporary foster care while Child Protective Services conducted an investigation into the girl's care.  Brett didn't foresee that he and his daughter would become caught up in an ongoing police investigation involving a psychopath attacking pedophiles and planting body parts in geocache locations.  Cache a Predator explores a father’s love, justice, and the life long impact of child abuse in a fast paced game of "hide the cache".

Cache a Predator takes readers on a well-written, dramatic adventure.  Weidenbenner effectively combines a psychological thriller, a mystery, a heart wrenching family drama--and even a little bit of a love story--all in one.  Weidenbenner explores the painful realities of child sexual abuse as well as the unfortunate issues surrounding child protective service agencies.  The plot is well developed.  Every time Brett Reed seems to reach a point of resolution--the author throws a new twist or turn that takes the story even further down a twisting path.

Readers will meet quite a cast of characters.  Readers will quickly love or hate the characters in Cache a Predator--but will desperately want resolution for them all.  Weidenbenner creates a realistic cast of damaged characters that will test a reader's views and expectations.  Weidenbenner serves up a good vs. evil cast--but, also shows another side to even the "bad guys".

Would I recommend Cache a Predator?  This was probably the best thriller/drama that I've read this summer.  It's not a happy, feel-good story with sugar coated scenes and contrived, happy endings--it's dark, emotional and, at times, disturbing.  While the love story aspect seemed a little misplaced at times, the storyline is well developed--with enough plot twists and turns to and keep readers turning pages until the end.

About the Author

Michelle is a fulltime employee of God’s kingdom, writing and encouraging writers every day. She’s often a sucker for emotional stories, her sensitive side fueling the passion for her character’s plights, often giving her the ability to show readers the “other” side of the story.

She grew up in the burbs of Detroit with five brothers. No sisters. Each time her mom brought the boy bundle home from the hospital Michelle cried, certain her mom liked boys better than girls. But when her brothers pitched in with the cooking, cleaning, and babysitting—without drama, Michelle discovered having brothers wasn’t so bad. They even taught her how to take direct criticism without flinching, which might come in handy with book reviews. Michelle is living her dream—writing every day and thanking God for the stories He puts in her path. When Michelle isn’t writing she’s winning ugly on the tennis court. She’s known as “Queen of the Rim Shots.” No joke. It’s ugly.

  1. Hi "Mama"
Thanks for this well-written review. Wow! It's fun reading what readers thought about the book. I think I need to make the next one more fun, funny, and less disturbing. What do you think?
