Coconut oil seems to be one of the hottest health and beauty
products trending these days. It’s hard
to find a recipe that doesn’t use coconut oil or a list of the many benefits of
coconut oil! I have been using coconut
oil occasionally for cooking in recent months—and in random skin and hair care
efforts. I was recently asked to review
Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil—and was excited to try it. What did
I think of Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil?
I sampled Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for a variety
of uses over the past several weeks. We found that the product remained a soft solid at room temperature in our home (around 73 degrees) and had a slight coconut scent and flavor.

In the Kitchen. I really
like using coconut oil for cooking and baking.
I find that the oil is easier to measure and heats more evenly. I tend to use less coconut oil than olive oil
or butter in recipes—so a little goes a long way. Most of the coconut oil that I’ve used in the
past has been odorless and flavorless--the Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin
Coconut Oil does smell and taste like coconut.
This works really well in recipes like my chocolate pomegranate bark or
subbed into an Asian themed stir fry—but, since coconut is not my favorite flavor, I have to be
a little more selective in this variety's use for recipes. If you love coconut--it's a great flavored oil option.
As a moisturizer. It’s
almost winter in Ohio—and dry skin is slowly taking over my life. One of my daughters has severe dry patches
and red spots on her arms and knees. I
am not a fan of chemically loaded lotions and creams—but, decided to try
coconut oil on her dry patches. She wasn’t
a fan of the smell at first, but decided that she preferred it to some of the
lotion scents she has tried. It did help
the dryness and she continues to use it daily at bedtime. I discovered that it worked fairly well on my
dry feet and heels—and preferred to use it at bedtime. It is pretty greasy when first applied—but,
absorbs well and fairly quickly.
For hair care. I tried using it for my
hair, but it was simply too heavy and oily for me—and I wasn’t a fan of how it
made my hair feel even after several rinses. It was a different
story for my daughter: she has very curly
hair that is frequently dry, frizzy and difficult. We found that applying just a little of the
coconut oil to the tips helped keep her curls under control. The scent was actually a fun, effective addition to her
hair care routine.
What was our overall review of Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil? I would recommend this product. It is GMO free, organic, and serves a variety of purposes well. I also noted that the container, while it is plastic, is BPA free. It is a quality product for the price, produced by a Viva Labs, a company respected for it nutritional supplements and products. I preferred it for use in the kitchen while my daughter loved it as a skin and hair product--it is truly a versatile, quality product.
