We had the fun opportunity to sit down and learn a little more about the author of The Plaque Legacy and her books in a recent interview. Read along as we talk with Christine Haggerty and she share some of herself and The Plague Legacy: Acquisitions.
A quick Summary of The Plague Legacy: Acquisitions
Half a century after the world
was decimated by a bio-engineered plague, military scouts are acquisitioning a
new supply of exports—slaves.
With his family dead,
sixteen-year-old Cameron Landry is a reluctant survivor, haunted by nightmares
and bound by promises. When he and his worst enemy, Devon, are both selected
for shipment to a civilization called Salvation, Cam suddenly has nowhere to
run. Devon is a mutant, stronger and faster, and his hatred for Cam grows with
each passing day. As Cam makes friends, and finds a surprising ally in Devon’s
twin sister, Tara, he learns a secret that could change everything.
But Devon is on the hunt, and Cam
is running out of places to hide.
An Interview with The Plague Legacy: Acquisitions author Christine Haggerty.
A Mama's Corner of the World (AMCOTW) What
was your inspiration for The Plague Legacy?
When did you begin writing it?
Christine Haggerty (CH): I had
the inspiration for The Plague Legacy
years ago while I was finishing my history minor in college. It is a
combination of the Children’s Crusade, the Roman gladiators, and the Black
Plague.
I
began writing it last summer after I moved and made a few connections with
writing groups and, most importantly, my publisher. It’s an amazing motivation
to write when you have a contract deadline! The first draft took me about three
months, then the revising took another three months.
AMCOTW: Tell us about the cover art for The Plague Legacy. Who designed it? Why did you
choose it?
CH: The
idea for the cover art came directly from the manuscript. The coin and the
rusty cruise ship are major items in the plot of the first story. The coin is a
symbol of the main character’s situation, and the cruise ship is a symbol of
society.
The
Fox Hollow team designed the cover, which I love. If you look closely, you can
even find my butterfly in the design.
AMCOTW: Who is your favorite character from your book
and why?
CH: I
think, in the end, my favorite character is a girl named Myla. She’s a mutant
who has been raised in an orphanage and expected her whole life to become a
gladiator. She’s a little gritty, but overall she has found a way to enjoy
life.
AMCOTW: Who is your least favorite character from The
Plague Legacy and why?
CH: My
least favorite character would have to be Devon. He’s the bad guy for a reason.
Although there’s some understanding about his state of mind, he’s pretty evil.
AMCOTW: Which character, if any, is most like you in The
Plague Legacy?
CH: I
would say that the two main female characters, Tara and Myla, are each parts of
me. Tara is more what I was like as a teenager, and Myla is what I’ve grown in
to. I can’t say that I really modeled them after me, but I did use my life
experience to give their personalities depth.
AMCOTW: What is something interesting about The
Plague Legacy that your readers and ours would like to know?
CH: I
would not ever actually shoot a puppy. I’ve discovered that my scenes do not
seem as rough and gory to me as they do to my readers, so while it does not
bother me to write like I do, I’m really a pretty nice person.
AMCOTW: Tell us a little about yourself when you are
away from writing. What hobbies,
talents, and adventures are we most likely to find you involved in when not
writing?
CH: My
favorite thing of all time is karate. I am a black belt in a traditional
Japanese style called Shotokan, but I haven’t trained since I moved about a
year and a half ago. I just connected with a local dojo to start training
again, which should help make the fight sequences in the next book, The Plague Legacy: Assets, pretty epic.
I also
spin fire poi. I’m more of a beginner in that hobby, but it’s quite a rush.
Other than that, I’m a typical suburban mom of three kids.
AMCOTW: How can readers contact you or find out more
about your books? Is there a fanpage, website, etc. that readers may not know
about?
CH: My
main site is www.christinehaggertyauthor.com. I’m still getting the gist of
blogging, but I have some art and info related to my books on there.
AMCOTW: What can your readers expect from you in the future? What projects are you working on?
CH: I am
currently working on the second and third books in The Plague Legacy trilogy. I also have my first in a series of
fairytale novelettes coming out this year, The
Grimm Chronicles: The Robber Bridegroom. Next year I’ll be working on a
stand-alone adult science fiction novel, and then more young adult fantasy.
AMCOTW: What is most rewarding about your role as an author--and as the author of The Plague Legacy?
CH: I
think simply the sense of accomplishment has so far been the most rewarding in
my new role as an author. It’s also pretty cool that my two teenage boys really
like my book. I know they fall into the ‘friends and family’ category of
readers, but now they are interested in helping me through my plot details when
I get stuck!
