The youngest desperately wants curly hair for Irish Dance competitions--but, doesn't want to wear a wig....Her hair has zero curl. Not even a random wave. Her sister got all of the curls (and gladly hides them away beneath a dance wig!) Since the youngest began wearing the velvet school dress, we have tried curling her hair....and it's a lot of work for little results. I thought I'd share my little hedgehog for this week's Wordless Wednesday link-up!
The 4am Happy Hedgehog
Nearly 150 curlers...12 hours of curl time...and little sleep since it's impossible to be comfortable and relaxed with so many curlers on her head. She was still all smiles when we woke at 4 am to begin the curl un-rolling and styling process--but, she did look a lot like the dog's squeaky, hedgehog toy.
And the results of our hair-curling adventures?
A few slight waves---a couple that could be called curls. She did receive lots of positive comments about her "natural hair" being a nice change in the curly, Irish dance world.
Hmmm....natural.....Well, I guess "natural beauty" is a lot of work!

ReplyDeleteAs a person with VERY naturally curly hair, I don't get it. At all. I pay GOOD money to get rid of my curls. GOOD money.
She looks great. I get it though. I paid good money to have my DDs hair curled when she was asked to be a flower girl two months ago. In just a few hours time, all we had to show for it was some very loose 'waves', and that's after we were all treated to asphyxiation by hairspray lol. :)

ReplyDeleteTell her not to worry about her lack of curls. I grew up in the sixties ironing my hair and wrapping it around coffee cans only to find those curls were there to stay for boys to play with. They'd stick pencils in my pony tail to see how far they could go into the rat's nest before I'd feel it. It was awful.

My hair is super straight as well. I remember wanting curly hair when I was little. Now I appreciate my straight hair. Funny how we always want what we don't have!

ReplyDeleteMy daughter used to have me put little braids all over her hair when she was little, and she'd fall asleep on it, wake up the next morning and have waves (no curls though). She loved that for some reason!! :)
I have fine hair combine that with length, then it look like I wore a stringy mop on top of my head. A couple of occasions, I remember my mother rolled my hair the night before school pictures were made to help improve things. What an uncomfortable mess that was! Unfortunately, my locks aways showed very little evidence that I had curled my hair at all.
ReplyDeleteBy the time I was 13, I had had it with my the straight mess and asked my mother to take me to the salon to have it cut...short. It wasn't pixie short, but it was close it enough. The interesting thing about having this done is when my hair began to grow out, then waves developed in my hair. The absence of weight being pulled on my hair equaled waviness. For the better part of my life from that point my hair held a bit of bounce. That is until I hit my mid-to late 40s then the wave went flat.
You're a special mother to put a smile on your little girl's face, but hopefully this experience will help her to accept her lack of curls and be happy with the beautiful bounty of hair that she has. Nice WW post!

ReplyDeleteAwww, she's adorable! Good luck to her with the competitions. I had no idea those dancers wore wigs -- no wonder the curls are over the top! She's a sweetie just the way she is. (But I do think the heggie look is pretty funny!)
