We can all be a little short sighted at times, and that isn’t meant literally. We are encouraged to think about our day to day lives, making decisions that will impact the afternoon or tomorrow, or even next week, and less about what we might be doing in five, ten or twenty years down the line. It’s fine to live that way, we are all very much aware life is too short and we need to enjoy every moment we have on this planet. But there is always that lingering feeling of the future? Often the decisions we make today can have a huge impact on our future lives.

You may be wondering how that could happen, but sometimes making good decisions now for the long term, not only helps us each day, but it also will have a positive effect on our future. You don’t need to really focus on what lies ahead, after all, we still need to live in the moment, but we can make decisions based on today that will have a positive impact on yourself in years to come. With that in mind, here are some of the things you could consider. There are actions that you can take now that will impact your future in a positive way.

Taking care of yourself on the inside and the out

It may sound obvious but what we put into our bodies is what we get out of it, wouldn't you agree? Having a great diet can give you the energy you need to complete your day. It can help with all sorts of things such as your skin and even impact on the quality of sleep you can get. But actually, eating a great diet right now will have a huge impact on yourself in the future. You are less likely to gain weight or become overweight, and you may also find that you are less likely to struggle with diseases that are commonly associated with your diet such as diabetes and blood pressure. We can all be guilty of enjoying the comfort food and junk every now and again, and while there is nothing wrong with that, if you 90% maintain a healthy and balanced diet then you are doing your future self a favor.

Another thing we don’t normally think will impact our future is taking exercise. Exercise can really help keep our muscles and bones strong, as well as enabling us to take in the right level of oxygen for our lungs, so the blood keeps pumping around our body. But, exercise is something you either love or loathe, and while you may keep putting off regular activity for another day, the sooner you start, the better you will feel and this can hugely impact on your future self when it comes to weight management and your physical health.

Maybe it is the smaller things that you don’t think about that can help you in the future. This might be things like your dental hygiene, where regular appointments or even having your teeth professionally cleaned, giving you a clean feeling inside your mouth can help you to feel better and in the long term be effective. Or maybe it is something like eyes and hearing checks, up to date health checks with your doctor or generally looking after yourself better. Small things can make a big difference in the future.

Making good financial decisions now

You also need to think about your financial future. It is all well and good having short term goals which may include savings for that vacation later in the year or even putting it towards a total so that you can buy a house and settle down. But actually, the decisions we make now financially can also be thought about when it comes to our future. People also consider buying properties for renting purposes, and then enjoying not only the long term gain in terms of valuation and paying off mortgages, but also in terms of the short term gain you can achieve through rental payments. There are also things like small regular savings that in time will add up to create hefty lump sums. It may seem like you are not doing too much for the future, but actually the short term is helping the long term goals to be achieved.

Having the right mindset each and everyday

Your mind is such a powerful tool, and we can really underestimate it at times. Negativity can breed further negativity, and with that it can really impact your day and your future. A positive outlook in life is a great way to make you feel better about yourself, but it can also have a real positive effect on your future. Living your life within a positive atmosphere and environment that you and your family have created means that happiness is there and that you start to feel good about everything. Which in turn means that you will open yourself up to other fantastic and positive things. It might feel difficult to do at first, like you are trying to develop a new habit. But, stick with it and turn your thoughts into positive ones. It can take 21 days to develop a new habit, so it will feel forced at first. However, the impact it can have on your future could be the motivation to keep on going and creating a positive bubble and outlook on life for now and for the future.

Not caring about what other people think

Finally, what we think other people think of us can actually stop us in our tracks and actually mean that we don’t pursue something. For example, you may find that you wanted to pursue a passion or a hobby, but if you think that other people start to think that what you are doing isn’t right or any good, then if you take that on board, you will probably end up not doing it. It is a sad story, but it is a true story for many people. The best advice when it comes to any actions you want to take in your life is to not worry about what other people think of you and what you are doing. If you think something is right, then you go for it. Making these decisions now means that only you know what your future holds, and it is in your hands.
