Having kids can be both exciting and challenging, especially when most of them have very short attention spans. However, there are many ways to keep them engaged. Whether through fun games or educational experiences, each one can be an important bonding moment for the whole family.
If you’re running out of ideas, here are some fun family activities to do with kids:
Go camping
Camping is always a good idea, especially for active kids who always love to play outside. Without distractions, like TV or computers, camping also allows the family to spend intimate time together.
If you’re not up to going through all the bells and whistles of nature camping, you can also just buy a tent for a family and pitch it out in the backyard. It may not be out in the wild, but the whole family can still snuggle together even if it’s just a few steps outside the living room.
Bake cookies or simple recipes
Food is another great way to involve the whole family in something fun and enjoyable. Bake something with the kids you know the kids will love, like cookies. This way, kids can get their hands on ingredients or simple tasks like mixing.
Adults can take care of the actual baking. Or, you can even go for no-bake cookies. In the end, everyone can enjoy tasty treats that the whole family did together.
Have a picnic
Take your baking bonding a step further and pack them up for a family picnic. Having a meal at a table is nice, but heading out and enjoying a clear and sunny day is even better. You can also make the picnic as simple or as elaborate as you’re willing to make it.
Whip up a storm in the kitchen and pack home-cooked meals, or simply grab food from a drive-thru and bring it to the park. Either way, having a picnic allows the kids to run around in the grass and still enjoy family time.
Walk the dogs (or any other pet) on a regular basis
Pets always bring the family together. If your kids are old enough to handle a leash, go on dog walks together. It’s a great start for the many ways you can exercise your dog. At the same time, it’s a great excuse for the whole family to spend time together without the pressure of having to come up with actual activities for the kids to do.
This is a great and fun activity, especially for kids who adore animals–family pet walks let the kids play with their pets and still spend time with mom and dad.
Go to a museum
There are so many children’s museums now. If you have one nearby, grab the kids and pay it a visit.
Museum visits don’t have to be boring. Choose interactive museums where kids can play with exhibits and learn new things at the same time. Science museums are usually a good choice for this kind of experience.
If you’re in a new place, visiting a history museum is also a great idea for the whole family.
Make family videos
Family videos are a lot of fun and you don’t even need any special equipment to do it. It can also play to the interests of family members. Love to dance? Do a music video. Love to sing? Do a song cover. You can make pretend infomercials of the kids’ stuffed toy collection.
You can do skits or you can simply gather candid moments of the family and put them together into a mini-movie. Whatever the video is, it’s a fun activity to do with kids and a great way to preserve precious memories.
Create a driveway masterpiece
Grab a box of colored chalk and turn your driveway into a family canvas. There’s enough space for everyone to do their thing and still have one space for everyone to create a full family artwork.
For more active kids, you can also turn your driveway into an activity area. Draw giant mazes, puzzles, or games. This way, the whole family plays together on things that you all created.
Have a movie night
The simplest but most effective activity–sit everyone in front of the TV, make some popcorn, and enjoy the show!
