In this bighearted book, the real story of a young boy with deafness in his ears is aided by his mother and teachers in navigating new school experiences. Mickey is just like everyone else, except he wears cochlear implants and has to do things just a little differently than most. This charming tale reminds us that we can all find happiness if we lean on and support each other.
Mickey on the Move Shares a Young Boy's True Story. The author does a beautiful job sharing a glimpse of her hard of hearing son's story--and showing the ways he has adapted to school, sports, and more with the help of family, friends, teachers--and his cochlear implants. Told in a simple, easy-to-read fashion, the author gives insights into her sons' world and his challenges--and successes.
The Book Is Both Inspiring and Insightful. The book is excellent as an educational tool to remind other children and caregivers that special situations may require particular adaptations. When Mickey faced a challenge with a noisy, crowded lunch area, his isolation solution was met with a better solution when his support system worked together. I felt that the flow of the story was a little choppy at times--and may have needed a few more pages to make transitions from focus to focus less abrupt--but, young children won't be bothered by it!
Would I Recommend Mickey on the Move by Michelle Wagner? Mickey on the Move is an easy to read book with a real-world character and real-world hearing challenges. It is a great way to introduce children to differences they may meet in other children--and as a reminder to those with hearing or other disabilities of the importance of communicating needs and concerns to their support system.
