About the Book

How can children begin to heal after losing a pet? Balloons for Tiger takes an imaginative look at this tough topic as colorful balloons travel from the hands of children to their beloved cat who has passed on. This book lets children open up their hearts and imaginations for a magical journey to the farthest corners of the world, where they'll meet skydivers, astronauts, superheroes, and everything in between. As they watch the balloons voyage to the other side of the rainbow bridge, they learn to positively process their grief. Balloons for Tiger is a great tool for any child who has experienced the loss of a pet- or any other loved one, too.

My Review

Imaginative Story Takes Readers on a Magical Journey.  At any given time, my family has a houseful of pets that we have adopted (or have adopted us). We have a few that have been a part of the family for as long as our daughters have. We have lost a few over the years too. Losing a pet is a painful loss to families and difficult for many little ones to understand. Balloons for Tiger follows a bunch of colorful memorial balloons as they make their way from the family to their recently lost pet. The balloons encounter familiar faces--like Santa and the Tooth Fairy--and some far-off places as they make their way to Tiger. The book offers families a way to allow children to imagine their lost pet and begin to cope with holding the pet in their hearts and minds rather than their laps!

Balloons for Tiger is a Simple Story with a Positive Message.  The story and illustrations are simple and colorful, giving families a lot to talk about and imagine as they move through the journey. I could imagine my girls asking, "But, how will we know that Tiger gets the balloons?"! The author guides readers to that answer in a lovely way. The book is relatable--and brings closure, and allows families to find a bit of peace in their loss.

Would I Recommend Balloons for Tiger by Lori Orlinsky? While the book is written about the loss of a pet--I could see it being valuable during the loss of a loved one as well. I would definitely recommend it to families or caregivers with little ones facing a loss. Bright, easy-to-read pages with colorful, simple illustrations and familiar characters give families a way to help little ones cope with a pet loss in a peaceful, positive way.
