About the Book

In the uniform town of Vanderloo,
Everyone, everywhere has the same view.
What happens when Astred, tiny Todd, and Ned
Decide to paint their white fence red?
Children's author and Mom's Choice Award winner Ed Damiano delivers a poignant message about community and creativity in The Red Fence.

My Review

Whimsical Book With Big Messages. Readers will find a Dr. Seuss feel to the story with bold, colorful illustrations and fun characters. Simple rhymes tell the story as the townspeople face change when new neighbors move into town. The Red Fence brings a few messages to readers about change, differences, and acceptance. It is the perfect book for little readers finding their place in the world and accepting themselves and others.

Would I Recommend The Red Fence?  The author and illustrator create the perfect blend of fantasy and real-world lessons as the Bean family display their originality and keep their own personalities in a community trying to change them. The Red Fence is the ideal book to introduce individuality and acceptance of others to preschool and young elementary-aged students--especially as we wind down the summer and look toward back to school--or first years at preschool or kindergarten.

Meet the Author

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Damiano has a passion for creativity, and his stories always contain a positive message. He also wrote The Christmas Blanket, which earned him a Mom’s Choice Award. In The Christmas Blanket, his character EJ realizes the true meaning of Christmas, which is not about getting presents, but about giving back to others.
