What Makes Me...Me is the perfect book to introduce children (and adults) to neurological diversity. One of my daughter's long-time friends has Tourette's--and has been in the school district's gifted program with her for many years. Her friend is highly gifted in languages and science and is a fantastic artist. Not to mention being quite a wonderful friend with a huge heart and loads of compassion. This book does a beautiful job introducing a child with Tourette's to young readers and caregivers--giving his points of view on the characteristics that make him....him. My daughter and classmates have pulled many adults (substitute teachers, librarians, club advisors) aside over the years to give them gentle reminders about her friend, his behavior--and his gifts. I think this book could serve well to educate adult caregivers gently, as well as educators and support staff too!
Colorful Illustrations Add to the Story. The author and her little primary character share emotions through the illustrations, too, as the little boy talks about situations and experiences that he encounters at school and home. Readers will see his happiness--and his fear and disappointment as well.
Would I Recommend What Makes Me...Me by Anne Baldwin? I think this is a wonderful story for little ones facing neurological differences and other young readers and caregivers. It can serve as a wonderful reminder to adults working with children that sometimes diversity isn't immediately visible! I would recommend this book to any group or organization serving or working with young children.
