My Review

Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times Brightens Up Some Dark Nursery Rhyme Originals. Traditional nursery rhymes were pretty dark and even a little scary at times for little readers! This book takes a brighter look at some nursery rhyme favorites and gives them a kinder, lighter spin! These updated rhymes still bring readers plenty to think about--and learn from--but are less dark and frightening than the originals!

Fun Illustrations Add to the Children's Story. Each page of the book is loaded with illustrations reflecting diverse characters and well-drawn emotions and scenes to help little ones navigate the emotional learning skills presented in the book. While every story isn't necessarily 100% happy, the brighter, kinder feel shines through with the images on each page.

Would I Recommend Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times by Pam Gittleman? If you shied away from traditional nursery rhymes because you worry they are a little harsh for little readers, you may enjoy adding this little book to your family's reading shelf. Some of the rhymes feel a little forced at times, but the opportunity to enjoy some old favorite nursery rhymes with a kinder, gentler view makes this an excellent addition to your reading library.

Meet the Author

Pam has been an early childhood music educator for over twenty-five years with a passion for singing, rhyming, reading stories, and making music with preschoolers.

When Pam noticed that some children seemed unfamiliar with traditional nursery rhymes, and that parents and teachers were avoiding them because of their outdated, dark, and inappropriate nature, she set out to modernize them. Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times® provides a memorable way to build language, musicality, and literacy through songs, stories and rhymes that nurture kindness, empathy, and gratitude. The inclusion of resources that support social and emotional learning (SEL) make it easy for parents and teachers to engage with the children they love.

The rhymes in the book can also be enjoyed as songs on the Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times album recorded by Raffi and Lindsay Munroe, as well as in videos on the Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times® Show on YouTube. (

Aside from making music with young children, Pam loves dogs and dark chocolate. She lives in New York with her husband, and loves when her children, grandchildren, and granddogs come to visit!

Pam collaborated with Dan and Catherine Markowitz for art and design of the book.
