About the Book

Discover a revolutionary approach to attachment theory that teaches readers how to heal their inner child to change their anxious, avoidant, or disorganized attachment style in relationships, friendships, at work, and home—perfect for readers of How to Do the WorkPolysecure, and Amir Levine’s Attached. Did you know that attachment style impacts more than romantic relationships? As it turns out, most of us are thinking about Attachment Theory all wrong, and triple board-certified clinical and forensic neuropsychologist Dr. Judy Ho is here to set the record straight.

Grounded in the science of attachment, Dr. Judy’s game-changing approach shows that our attachment style impacts every aspect of our lives: friendships, career, goal setting, and, critically, our sense of self. Moreover, we can all learn to become securely attached—no matter what attachment style we developed in childhood—meaning that we can reclaim our ability to feel safe, loved, and capable of achieving the life we’ve always wanted.

Through Dr. Judy’s innovative program, readers will learn to identify their attachment style, recognize their core needs and wounds, and implement evidence-based practical tools to heal their inner child as they develop the secure attachment we all need to thrive.

Readers will also benefit from:
  • A new attachment style quiz to identify your attachment style in all areas of life.
  • A personalized approach that allows you to start making positive change today.
  • More than two dozen transformative exercises to support your journey to healing.

With warmth, authority, and a bias to action, The New Rules of Attachment is a call to achieving unconditional self-love and a meaningful, joyful life.

My Review

The New Rules of Attachment by Dr. Judy Ho Offers Readers A Lot to Consider. This book holds tons of resources for readers, fully equipped with self-help guidance, examples, and relatable, well-organized chapters--as well as several exercises to help readers learn about their attachment style (or styles) and learn to heal and grow with that style (or despite them)! The author offers an initial "test" to help readers identify their attachment style and then builds a self-help guide directed toward each style to help readers not only identify and understand some of the elements of each style but also learn ideas and mechanisms to remedy some trauma effects and strengthen some of the positive factors to aid in healing and personal growth. The book holds pages of opportunities for self-reflection--and tons of points for self-discovery and eye-opening realizations.

Don't Expect to Read the Book Like a Traditional Self-Help Book. This book is easy to read, understand, and use as a self-help resource. It is well-organized and holds a wealth of scientific-based resources and easy-to-understand examples. That doesn't mean you will read it in an afternoon and gain all the benefits in an hour or so. This book is set up like a self-help program with several relevant exercises for readers to work through related to their identified attachment style. While I have read the book entirely, I have only begun working through the suggested reflections, activities, and exercises related to my style. Some of the activities take some time to complete--some require revisiting.

Would I Recommend The New Rules of Attachment? I think everyone could benefit from the resources and suggestions in this book. Even if you do not feel that you need to "heal" your inner child, you may still find the book interesting and insightful, especially regarding the psychology influencing various elements of your life. I am planning to work through the book with my husband (and will be sharing it with my adult children as some of my childhood influences and traumas certainly impacted my parenting styles in various ways, etc.) The author does a beautiful job presenting the science of attachment in a down-to-earth, easy-to-understand format that is engaging and helpful to readers from various backgrounds.  This book is not a run-of-the-mill book filled with loads of the same old/same old self-help tips toward a more positive you--it's a powerful guide that I am excited to explore and use in-depth after my first read-through.
