Book Review: Beneath Manhattan Skies by Emma Meade

More and more, I find myself enjoying books with supernatural themes--and was interested in reading a book from author Emma Meade.  How did Beneath Manhattan Skies stand up to review here in A Mama's Corner of the World?

Summary of Beneath Manhattan Skies. November in New York is cold but full of possibility for college freshman Erin Harris. When her twin brother, Nick, shows up on her doorstep for a surprise visit, Erin is delighted. Unfortunately, Nick’s arrival coincides with the discovery of a body outside her apartment building, a body drained of blood. Right away, Nick assumes vampires are involved. He’s not exactly their biggest fan since Erin dated one in high school.

Juggling nosy roommates, a first date with a gorgeous guy from college and a brother on a Van Helsing kick is enough to keep any nineteen year old girl busy - And then Erin’s old flame walks back into her life. Is Erin destined to be caught up in supernatural shenanigans, or will she choose a different path?

*Beneath Manhattan Skies is a standalone story, following the character Erin Harris from Under the Desert Moon.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in my review and all opinions are my own.

My thoughts on Beneath Manhattan Skies by Emma Meade.

Beneath Manhattan Skies is a quick read--with a little bit of everything.  Readers will encounter a little mystery, a little drama, adventure and enough left unsettled to leave readers ready for more glimpses into Erin's life.   Meade's writing flows well and the storyline moves quickly and easily.

Do you need to read Under the Desert Moon first?  Beneath Manhattan Skies is written as a complete, stand alone story--but, I felt that I would have enjoyed the story more had I read the previous book as the series moves through the main character's life.  You don't have to read the books in order--but, I think I would have been better settled into the book if I had.

Would I recommend Beneath Manhattan Skies?  This book is more than a vampire fan's, supernatural romance--and that made it a hit with me.  I have grown a little tired of the theme and found Meade's approach just different enough to keep me interested (and ready to read more of Erin's adventures.

James turned.

He stood on the edge of the roof, hands in his pockets, feet spaced apart.

For half a minute, they simply looked at one another.

Erin shut the door and approached him, stopping a safe five feet from the edge.

When she didn't move any closer, James removed his hands from his pockets.

He was in front of her before she could blink. He took her hands, drawing her forward. Fighting him was useless. She may as well have been a rag doll in comparison to his strength.

She gasped when he placed her at the very edge, facing out. James stood behind her, holding her lightly by the hips.

“Don't be afraid. I've got you.”
