I seem to be on a romance novel binge this month! I rarely opt to read and review them--but, I've found myself reading several over the past few weeks! The latest romance novel to cross my reading list is the first novel from Pamela T. Starr--and the first of her Shifting Sands series. What did I think of Truths Not Spoken? I am pleased to share my review--and offer readers the opportunity to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author or publisher. All opinions are my own.
About the Book
Single mother Laurel Walters had her life under control. She had a jewelry business, a generous best friend and a careful watch on her nine-year-old daughter, Emily. Then, Emily is seen on national television with Vic, the man who could tear their world apart. With one thirty second news clip, Laurel's life turns into a tailspin. The paparazzi chase her. Two men from her past want her: Vic is a former lover. Kyle a former friend. They both know her secret, and either one could ruin the careful life Laurel built for herself and Emily. Faced with no other option, Laurel turns to Kyle to protect her and her life with Emily. But just as Laurel and Kyle are beginning to trust each other, they learn of shocking betrayals they each have been hiding. Some secrets are made to be broken. Some secrets never should be. But how does Laurel learn which ones are which? Truths Not Spoken is the debut novel by promising new author Pamela T. Starr. It is a must-read for every woman who balances her dreams of love with a man with the needs of her child. Truths Not Spoken shows readers that yes, dreams can come true.
Truths Not Spoken is a Quick Read with some Surprises. The author does a nice job giving readers insights into each of her characters' thoughts and motivations by giving each his/her own voice within her chapter-per-character writing style. This gave the book an easy to read, easy to follow pace. In spite of these insights; the author was able to keep some secrets along the way--and serve those to readers and characters alike throughout the book.
Starr Sets Up Her Series Well in this First Book. Readers get to know her characters--but, most still seem pretty undeveloped and immature. I'm expecting her to allow them to grow and change and open up as her series grows. All in all, the author did a nice job introducing readers to her characters and their worlds for future books.
Would I recommend Truths Not Spoken. Some of the characters were pretty immature and not necessarily realistic to their life roles--so, I did not really develop a lot of attachment to any of them. Having said that, it was still an enjoyable and entertaining story and I found myself adding a note to my reading list to watch for the next book in the series as the author teased with a quick introduction at the end of this book. While I do not love any of the characters--I did like the author's writing style and the flow of her story and I do want to see where the stories go next! If you enjoy light, contemporary romance novels--this book is worth a spot on your reading list.
