When I was a child, I remember my mother saying that she would never forget the day that President Kennedy was assassinated. Even decades after the day. I didn't understand that at the time. Then, I experienced that forever-etched-in-my-memory-kind-of-day when the terror attacks of 9/11 happened. I was scheduled to give a safety training class and had just set up the materials for the class in our conference room. A co-worker walked in and switched the television to news coverage. The day as we knew it just simply stopped. We cancelled training and left the room open and the news coverage running so that employees could filter in and watch throughout the day. I will never forget standing in that room, watching so many people walk in and simply stare at the television screen in silence. There was an emptiness that I had never felt before--and that I will never forget.
Last week, a movie focused on that day opened in theatres. 9/11 tells a story of terror, hope, courage and survival in a horrific scene that most of us could never imagine. I wanted to share some details about the film--and facts about that day and its aftermath. As part of this spotlight, the 9/11 film has sponsored a prize pack giveaway for one interested reader at the end of this post--including a Guide to Talking to your Children About 9/11.

In
the World Trade Center, a billionaire sits
in his attorney’s office awaiting a
divorce hearing against his wife. In a
west side apartment, a bike messenger
kisses his 5-year old daughter and sings
her “Happy Birthday” before leaving for
work. A maintenance man gets dispatched to
help a tenant with his lock. In an upper
east side apartment, a young model musters
the courage to break up with her sugar
daddy. As random as random can be, these
individuals step into a crowded World
Trade Center elevator.
Wrapped
up in their own world, they all ride
silently hearing only the sound of the
elevator giving notice of each floor. When
the elevator stops on the 34th floor, it
empties leaving only these five behind.
Moments later ... their world changes as
the collision of a jet into the North
Tower incapacitates the elevator.
With
no understanding of what has happened and
is happening around them, these fives are
forced to band together and fight against
all odds to escape from the impending
horrific collapse. During these critical
minutes, a story of courage, faith, and
the will to live unfolds.
