Alex & Me Movie Review & Giveaway

This morning, we are excited to share our review of the new family movie, Alex & Me.  Two of our three girls have played soccer and have experienced the ups and downs of the club soccer / soccer training worlds.  My 12 year old daughter shares her thoughts on the movie and I will share my review as well.  With club team tryouts just finishing up for the upcoming year--it is the perfect time for families to watch this movie!  We also have an opportunity for you to win a copy of Alex and Me in the giveaway at the end of this post.

**“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”**
About Alex & Me
Teenager Reagan Willis (Agudong) has one dream – to play soccer like her hero, Alex Morgan. Her bedroom is a shrine to all things Alex, including a life-size poster of the Olympic gold medalist. Yet in the Willis house, Reagan lives in the shadow of her prep football superstar brother, Logan. When Reagan fails to make the cut of the premiere local soccer club team and is humiliated by her rival Claire, she’s certain her ship has sailed. But after accidentally hitting her head, Reagan’s poster of Alex Morgan suddenly comes to life and everything changes!

An Olympic Gold Medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion with a penchant for goal scoring, Alex Morgan is one of the top soccer players on the planet, currently playing forward for the United States Women's National Team and the Orlando Pride of the National Women's Soccer League. Away from the field, Morgan is also an accomplished author of “The Kicks” series, a collection of chapter books filled with wonderful messages of empowerment for young girls. The first The Kicks book, “Saving the Team,” debuted at No. 7 on the New York Times Best Seller list.
Eric Champnella (Thunderstruck, Mr. 3000, Eddie) wrote the Alex & Me screenplay and is also making his full-length feature debut as the film’s director. Alex Morgan serves as co-producer. Producers are Mike Karz (Blended) and William Bindley (Mother’s Day). Todd Williams (The Illusionist) is the executive producer.
Jerry Trainor (iCarly) also stars as Nigel, a less-than-reliable youth soccer coach, alongside Matt Cornett (Bella and the Bulldogs) as Reagan’s brother, Logan; Colin Critchley (Legends of the Hidden Temple) as Reagan’s soccer-playing pal, Ben; Chuiti Tiu (Nashville) as Reagan’s mother, Ann Wills; and Jim Klock (True Detective, Scream Queens) as Reagan’s father (and biggest fan), Joe Wills. Jessica Treska (HBO’s upcoming Sharp Objects) plays Reagan’s arch-rival, Claire.
Madelyn's Review
Alex & Me is Very Relatable. I am 100% positive that 95% of the girls who watch the movie can connect to one concept or another--like not making the club soccer team you wanted, being in your sibling’s shadow, or constantly being put down by a peer.

Alex & Me is Inspiring. Yes, Reagan was discouraged when she didn’t make the top-ranked club and; more so when she joined a club with lousy conditions. But did that stop her?

Alex & Me is Funny. I admit that the concept of a poster coming alive was a bit weird, but there were several quips that kept me enjoying the movie.

On the downside...

Alex & Me is predictable and sealed. Everything turns out fine and all of the girl’s troubles were resolved. I don’t think that you could make a series out of this movie without the viewers getting tired of it. I wouldn’t want to see essentially the same thing happen but to another child.

Would I recommend Alex & Me? I would recommend this movie to 7-12 year olds who love soccer.
My Review of Alex & Me

Soccer Moms and Dads will love this movie--for many reasons.  As Madelyn said, kids will relate to the movie's scenes.  Parents will also relate--especially those parenting more than one active, driven child. Many soccer parents have experienced the ups and downs of club soccer--from making teams to getting cut from a team to braving the world of player interactions and parent input.  I have been the parent making calls and sending emails to find a team with open spots or supplemental tryouts.  I have been the parent choosing between a soccer match or a cross country meet.  I have also experienced the impact of negative players and negative parents on the sport.  While this movie makes Claire's father comical in his bribes and over-the-top antics--I think most of us have met parents just like him on the soccer fields.  While, it was nice to relate to the movie--it was even better to watch Reagan push herself beyond her comfort zones to meet her goals and to inspire others.

Alex & Me is a clean, funny, inspiring family movie.  As a parent, I agree with Madelyn that the poster coming to life was a little eye-roll worthy.  However; Reagan's drive and determination is inspiring--and the movie sends a message about self confidence and perseverance within its soccer scenes, middle school hallways and cute one-liners.

Would I recommend Alex & Me? I would also recommend this movie to families with 7-12 year old kids (really boys or girls) who love soccer.  I think it would be an especially helpful movie to watch if your child didn't quite make that team or is struggling to find the motivation and drive to practice a sport or activity.  It is entertaining--but, also holds a message about hard work, practice, pushing beyond limits and growth.  And--it does feature world champion soccer player, Alex Morgan--so her fans are certain to be excited to watch her character shine off the field.
