4 Ways to Add Extra Space to Your Home

You love your home, but have you ever found yourself wishing you had a bit more space? You can continue to deal with the space you have, or you can turn your wish into a reality. Here are four ways to give yourself more usable space in your home.

Build Out

One of the most well-known ways to give your home some extra space is to build an addition. You have countless options, whether you need another bathroom, a spare room, or even an entire in-law suite. Building out can be time-consuming and costly, but it is a highly effective way to give you the extra space you need. Additions also help to add value to your home, which is something to keep in mind if you plan on selling in the future.

Build Up

If you don’t have the yard space to build out, another option is to build up. Like building out, adding another story to your home can be a long, expensive project. If you have an attached garage and don’t want to build an entire second floor, another option is to build a bonus room over the garage. Again, just like building out, building up can help to boost the overall value of your home.

Add a Deck

If you enjoy hosting family and friends for parties and would love to start hosting outdoors, it may be time to visit the hardware store. An excellent option to give you the space (and excuse) to do so is to add a deck or elevated deck (if your property is uneven). You can even go so far as to outfit your deck with an outdoor kitchen and furniture to make it feel just as cozy as the inside of your home.

Convert a Basement or Attic

In some cases, you don’t need to build onto your home at all to give yourself more usable space. If you have a basement or attic, you already have the space available. If you’re not really using your basement or attic for anything, convert it. You can convert either space into an extra bedroom, an office, a game room, or a playroom for your kids. If your basement is large enough, you may even be able to convert the space into an entire apartment.

Insufficient space in your home doesn’t mean you need a new house. You can add on the space you need with an extra room or deck. Or, rather than adding on to your home, you can convert a space you don’t use, giving you more usable square footage. You get to keep the home you love and gain the extra space you need!
