About the Movie

Set in the peak of the 1960s Civil Rights movement, “Paul's Promise” is the inspiring true story of Paul Holderfield, former racist firefighter-turned-pastor who started one of the first integrated churches in the American South. It’s one man’s journey to hope and healing during a troubled time in our Nation’s history that resulted in one man’s decision to serve God and stand up to injustice - a story that continues to make a huge impact on the community to this day.

My Thoughts on Paul's Promise

Heavily Preachy--Yet Still Holds Some Emotional Messages. This movie begins and essentially ends with a church service and is filled with heavy-handed messages of Faith and God's Love and Prayer. While Mama Holderfield faces a cancer diagnosis, she continues to pray for her son Paul and others on her "prayer list," Paul seeks to come to terms with his past, present, and faith. As the family faces their own battles with faith and life--racial turmoil brews in their Arkansas town and the nation to add some side messages of love/hate and healing.

Many of us may know someone strong in faith like Mama Holderfield--we may even be somewhat of that prayer warrior believer ourselves. Many, however, may be a little put off by the preachy nature of the film. Some scenes are so filled with religious messages that they are a bit unbelievable, even for believers!

While the movie doesn't have many non-preaching scenes--there are still some emotional moments that touch the heart and remind us of the power of prayer and faith and love.

Paul's Promise Brings Relatable Moments to Viewers. There is a scene where Paul struggles to cope with the many conflicts of the film:

  • His mother's cancer.
  • His childhood.
  • Racial stress in the community.
  • His relationship with his father and his mother's desire for him to find Jesus again.

He broke down--not knowing where to turn. This moment is quite relatable to many as we face our daily battles, from losing loved ones to life's everyday challenges to societal challenges that draw us in.

Would I Recommend Paul's Promise? It is a family-friendly movie--but it may be best suited to older Christian teens and adults as the messages are a little strong for the attention of most younger viewers. Linda Purl is fabulous as Mama, and Josef Cannon made Jimmy a film favorite. Some of the Young Mama and Young Will scenes were a little forced and poorly executed--but much of the film brought emotionally charged scenes successfully to life.

Paul's Promise is a movie for the faith-filled or those seriously seeking the inspiration to become faith-filled. It is a movie for believers needing reminders of faith, love, and guidance. I enjoyed watching Paul's story emerge from the man transformed during the film--especially knowing that the movie is based on a real person.
