About the Book

Templeton Academy- the superhero high school is finally open! The prestigious institution is recruiting the best of the best to enroll in its student body. The school is as mysterious as it is exclusive.

Grady Whill thinks there is nothing special about him to make the grade. However, his best friend, Aarush Patel has been selected and thinks Grady has the right stuff. Even school bully Elwood Bledsoe is attending.

If Grady is fortunate enough to be picked, his guardian has forbidden him to attend. Will a family secret prevent Grady from becoming the superhero he was destined to be?

My Review

This book is an excellent start to the Grady Whill Series. The author really creates relatable characters that tweens and teens will love. It is also a clean fantasy that will appeal to older readers too! The characters face some typically unfortunate middle school/high school issues like popularity, bullying, and friendship--they also have backstories to work through, like autism, anxiety-induced asthma, lost parents, money issues, confidence issues, and such. Readers will be drawn to Grady and his friends as they brave their middle school to high school years and venture into the unknown with Templeton Academy.

Roman creates characters to love in this book. It is impossible not to love the friendship between Grady and Aarush. Aarush's confidence in himself and in Grady keeps Grady's teenage self-doubt in check at times. Watching the teens grow and find their places in life at Templeton, come of age, and learn about themselves and their strengths--and weaknesses--and, most importantly, grow as an adventure team--makes this a great book from start to finish no matter the age of the reader.

Would I Recommend Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex by Carole P. Roman? This book certainly hits its target audience in theme. Kids love fantasy adventures and superhero lures. Just as the characters are coming of age, there are pieces of older teen thought that make it lean more toward older teens than younger middle school readers. It has a Harry Potter feel at times--but brings even more of a friendship angle to this adventure. The novel does end with some loose ends, so readers should expect to continue future adventures with Grady and the crew. This first book brought smiles and a definite interest in Grady's future! I recommend it to fans of clean, teen-focused adventures with great, relatable characters.
