Does Your Home’s Exterior Need A Spring Clean?

Many of us periodically clean the inside of our homes, but when was the last time you cleaned the outside? A dirty property exterior can make your home less welcoming to guests, reduce curb appeal when selling and potentially even lead to wear and tear.

If you haven’t cleaned the outside of your home in a while, it could be time to consider scheduling a spring clean. Below are a few exterior cleaning tasks that are worth looking into.

Windows

Dirty window panes can result in distorted views and reduced sunlight. Rain will wash off most dirt, but there will still be some sediment left behind that will build over time.

Meanwhile, window frames can accumulate mildew, moss, dirt and algae which can damage the frames over time.

While you may be able to easily clean the inside of your home’s windows, you’ll likely need professional window cleaning services to clean the outside - especially upper floor windows. Such professionals will know how to safely and thoroughly clean your windows.

Doors

Doors can get grubby over time as a result of pollution and exposure to the elements, making your home less attractive. A dirty front door can have a particularly damaging impact on how welcoming your home is, as it’s often the first part of your home that visitors look at.

Take the time out to scrub down any exterior doors with a sponge and some hot soapy water. It could also be worth getting rid of any cobwebs around doors (porches are a common place for spiderwebs to accumulate).

Gutters

Over time, gutters can clog up with leaves and other debris. This can cause water to spill out over the sides instead of draining - and in some cases it can even cause damage to gutters if sitting water freezes and expands.

Annually inspecting your gutters is recommended to make sure there are no blockages. If you don’t want to do this yourself, you can hire a gutter cleaning company to do it for you.

 Roofing

Roofs can become covered in moss and algae over time. This can not only damage your home’s curb appeal, but weaken roofing materials like timber and asphalt, leading to leaks, pests and heat loss.

Cleaning a roof can be a dangerous job, so it’s important to hire an experienced roof cleaning company. They will know exactly which tools to use to clean your roof without damaging it, as well as knowing how to scale your roof safely.

These are just some of the most common parts of a home’s exterior that you should consider cleaning, however there could be other elements to consider such as driveways, fences and patios. Always make sure to use the right cleaning tools to prevent damage to your home’s exterior (a pressure washer can be suitable for many exterior cleaning jobs, but not all cleaning jobs). Make sure to also take care when working at heights - for some jobs like upper story window cleaning, gutter cleaning and roof cleaning, it might be safer to hire professionals.
