Children’s Book Review: If You Were Me and Lived in...India by Carole P. Roman

My daughters and I devote a little bit of every day of the summer to exploring the world around us—both in our own little corner of the world and in far off places. I think it is very important for us to understand our global environment—and it is so much fun for the kids to learn about and experience other lands, customs, and cultures. We recently had the opportunity to review If You Were Me and Lived in.. India by Carole P. Roman. What did we think of If You Were Me and Lived in... India?

Note: We received a complimentary copy of this book for use in our review. All opinions are our own.

Quick Summary of If You Were Me and Lived in...India by Carole P. Roman. The world is getting smaller, thanks to speedy travel and Internet connectivity. As the increasingly global, multicultural environment takes hold, Carole P. Roman, a former social studies teacher and travel buff, presents a book that opens up an exotic country in South Asia. In If You Were Me and Lived in … India, Roman takes kids on a virtual excursion, with cultural information that will captivate children from 3-to-8-years old and beyond. Children will discover popular Indian foods, holidays, activities and landmarks. Other information the book introduces includes the capital, currency and even some common Indian names.

If You Were Me and Lived in..India by Carole P. Roman offers a fun, light introduction to India for children. As a parent, I love books that offer easy to read, kid-friendly bits of information. Roman offers a fun, simplistic look at a few of the highlights of Indian culture—and presents them from a child’s point of view. What would I want to know (as a child) about children in India? Reasonably, my girls are far more interested in the most common Indian names for boys and girls or Indian food than geographical facts and figures. Roman offers a lot of basic information about India—and creates just enough interest in the country for readers to explore at greater depths.

Would I recommend If You Were Me and Lived in … India by Carole P. Roman? This book offers a fun starting point for the cultural exploration of India. My youngest daughter enjoyed the book and is looking forward to learning more about India over the summer. I would recommend this book for families or even teachers beginning a study unit on world cultures or India specifically. It’s written perfectly for the preschool/early elementary audience and is sure to encourage further learning. This is only one of the books in the If You Were Me and Lived in... series--my youngest is ready to visit Mexico, South Korea and France next!
