Kill and Run by Lauren Carr Book Review

I love mysteries and crime dramas; so the latest series from author Lauren Carr seemed the perfect addition to my reading list. What was my review of Kill and Run?

I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in my blog review. All opinions are my own.

Quick Summary of Kill and Run. Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to sift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

Kill and Run is packed with suspense. I love mysteries that remain mysteries until nearly the end.Carr did a nice job leading readers into false conclusions and twists and turns with a complex plot, more than one mystery and intertwined characters. Complex plots with multiple victims and multiple suspects are often either confusing—but, Kill and Run offered clear connections and logical (although sometimes unexpected) plot twists.   I enjoyed the characters in Kill and Run.  Some of Carr's characters have appeared in her other books--but, since I have not read them; the characters and their pasts were all new to me.  Sometimes, readers a little left behind if they do not follow an author through other series.  Carr did a wonderful job creating an assortment of characters with enough detail that new readers to her books will not feel slighted. I think I fell for this series the moment the author introduced Irving, the 25-pound Maine Coon cat. (My readers have likely met my Frito--our own 25 pound Maine Coon cat with much of Irving's personality.) There was simply a real world, human quality to all of the characters and the interactions in this book--and an attention to real world details and subplots .
Would I recommend Kill and Run?
I enjoyed the author’s writing style—and I developed enough of an attachment to the characters in the series to not only recommend this book—but, to look forward to more from the author in the future.    The characters complement each other well and the writing style is easy to read, detailed, and very organized toward the story’s resolution.
