Quick Summary of Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's Saturn Surprise by Oneeka Williams. Born with supernatural powers from electrical energy, she jets around the Universe fixing problems with her gifted hands. Dr. Dee Dee’s, and cousin Lukas’s, visit to the Island of Positivity Planetarium is interrupted when Gordon the Gullible Globe sounds the alarm that Saturn’s rings have disappeared. Dr. Dee Dee is skeptical but mobilizes her team of assistants and instruments for a mission to Saturn. Oh boy! Is she SURPRISED when she arrives at Saturn!
Saturn Surprise is packed with information and resources for families. While this is only a short, children's book; it is loaded with vocabulary, facts, and additional resources for families to explore. Because the text is a bit difficult in spots; I think it's less likely to be a book of interest for many readers--unless they have a very strong science interest. However, this book would make a wonderful supplement to in-school, science topic or for homeschooling parents.
My girls preferred reading the book together. The girls were more interested in the science lesson than the storyline. The youngest is 9--and both are very analytical. My older daughter felt that the reading level of the text was a little difficult for the interested age range. There was a lot of information to read through for a leisure read! Reading the book together; however, and exploring the resources as a family made the book a hit.
Would I recommend Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's Saturn Surprise by Oneeka Williams? I would suggest this book for little scientists-in-training. If your child has an interest in space, science and mathematics--this book may work as a "leisure reading" book for him or her. I would highly recommend it; however, to use as a themed reading material to supplement science lessons or to explore new math and science concepts as a family. The author writes wonderfully detailed pages--and fills them with facts and educational resources. I loved the discovery questions and the math challenge at the end of the book!

What do you get when you combine a science teacher with a journalist? A surgeon who writes poetry and children’s books….Dr. Oneeka Williams
I love science and always knew I wanted to be a doctor. I even performed minor surgery as early as age 12 when one of my classmates ripped her earring out of her ear lobe and I came to the rescue.
My journey took me first to Johns Hopkins University, ‘the pre-med capitol’. I then went to Harvard Medical School, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital and Lahey Clinic for surgical training. All along the way my creative outlet continued to be writing and interior design. I love painting, remodeling, renovating, upholstering furniture and landscaping
I have always participated in various community volunteer programs with young people. One weekend, as I was cutting into cow hearts at a girl’s science club activity and finding engaging ways to present the physiology, it occurred to me that I wanted to write books that would share my love for science and medicine. I was inspired by my Mom who has written several science texts.
Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo is truly the embodiment of everything I hold dear. She is caring, dynamic, energetic, positive, powerful, spunky and believes that she can do anything. She heals with her hands, brings surgery and science together and loves her family.
