Cooking with Kids: Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats for Halloween

My youngest daughter desperately wanted to contribute a post to the blog for Halloween this year.  She loves to cook--and cooks very well.  She has a wonderful sense of flavors and enjoys creativity.  She has wanted to make Rice Krispie treats in the form of candy corn since August, I believe--and her schedule finally allowed her some dedicated kitchen time this weekend!  She downsized the recipe and added her own food styling with some white frosting and fall themed, candy sprinkles.

Instructions for Candy Corn Shaped Rice Krispie Treats

Prepare Pan.  We used a standard 8-inch, metal cake pan and buttered it heavily by simply rubbing it with butter.

Melt the Marshmallows for the Yellow Layer.  Spray a large, microwave safe bowl with cooking spray.  Add the marshmallows and butter for the yellow layer.  Cover the bowl with a paper towel and microwave on high for about 30 seconds or until the butter is melted.  Spray a large spoon with cooking spray and stir the mixture to completely distribute the butter.

Color the Yellow Layer and add the Rice Krispies.  Add the yellow food coloring and stir quickly to combine.  Mix in the Rice Krispies cereal.  Spray your hands with cooking spray and press the cereal immediately into the prepared pan--forming a ring around the outer edge.

Melt the Muarshmallows for the Orange Layer.  Spray a large, microwave safe bowl with cooking spray.  Add the marshmallows and butter for the orange layer.  Cover the bowl with a paper towel and microwave on high for about 30 seconds or until the butter is melted.  Spray a large spoon with cooking spray and stir the mixture to completely distribute the butter.

Color the Orange Layer and add the Rice Krispies.  Add the yellow and red food colorings and stir quickly to combine.  Mix in the Rice Krispies cereal.  Spray your hands with cooking spray and press the cereal immediately into the center of the prepared pan.  Since we chose to frost the tips of the treat wedges white--there is no need to leave space in the center of the pan.

Cool, Cut, Frost, and Decorate.  Allow the treats to cool completely.  Cut the treats evenly into 8 equal wedges.  Frost the tips with white frosting and decorate with fall themed candy sprinkles.  We opted to insert decorative, lollipop sticks into the ends as well.
