About the Book

Shoot like a Girl depicts the historically fictive tale of a young Annie Oakley's struggles before she becomes the most famous sharpshooting woman of all time. After the death of her father, Annie is sent to the Drake County poorhouse where she learns to cook, sew, and keep house for other families to help her mother make ends meet. Annie ends up at the McCrimmons, a couple whom she comes to refer to as "the wolves." Cruel and neglectful, the McCrimmons push Annie to the brink of despair. The only bright spot in her dreary existence is Buck, a beautiful buckskinned horse, and the two form a bond. Despite her resolve to help her family, Annie loses hope of ever seeing them again, as life at the McCrimmons' becomes more oppressive, and she is cut off from all outside communication. Physically and emotionally weak from illness, hunger, and abuse, Annie resigns herself to a life of servitude to the abusive couple. But, when Mr. McCrimmon's continued cruelty to Buck finally threatens the horse's life, Annie takes matters into her own hands and formulates a plan for escape.

About the Book

In this second book in the Annie Oakley historical mystery series, award-winning author Kari Bovee brings back the lovable character, Annie Oakley, as an amateur sleuth. It's 1887, and Annie and Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show are invited to Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebration in London, England. But their long journey across the Atlantic takes a turn for the worst when the queen's royal servant ends up dead and Annie's husband, Frank Butler, falls suspiciously ill. Annie soon discovers that the two events are connected--and may be precursors to an assassination attempt on the queen. In London, it becomes clear that there is rampant unrest in the queen's kingdom--the Irish Fenian Brotherhood, as well as embittered English subjects, are teeming in the streets. But amid the chaos, even while she prepares for the show, Annie is determined to find the truth. With the help of a friend and reporter, Emma Wilson, the renowned poet Oscar Wilde, and the famous socialite Lily Langtry, Annie sets out to hunt down the queen's enemies--and find out why they want to kill England's most beloved monarch.

Fried Eggs with Sweet Potato Breakfast Hash Recipe

For the past few months--everything has been disrupted due to the Coronavirus restrictions.  From schedules to diet--our family is currently returning to "normal"--though it is a new normal.  This new normal also includes a return to a more normal diet with real foods, less meat and less processed sugars.  I have made sweet potato hash before with turkey sausage and fried egg whites.  This recipe cuts the meat, adds the whole egg and changes up the ingredients a bit for a sweet, yummy, breakfast hash.
Fried Eggs over Sweet Potato Hask
Ingredients for Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Eggs

2 tsp. Cooking Oil  (Coconut Oil or Olive Oil) or Olive Oil Flavored Cooking Spray
1 c. Sweet Potatoes, Diced
1/2 c. Yellow Onion, Chopped
1/2 c. Red Bell Pepper, Chopped
1/2 c. White Mushrooms, Chopped
1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder
2 tsp. Cooking Oil  (Coconut Oil or Olive Oil) or Olive Oil Flavored Cooking Spray
Salt
Pepper
1 Tbsp. Butter or Cooking Oil for Frying the Egg
4 Eggs

Ingredients for Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Eggs

Fry the hash ingredients.  Heat the cooking oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot--but, not smoking.  Add the sweet potatoes and cook for 3-4 minutes--stirring often to avoid over browning.  Add the peppers, onions and mushrooms.  Cook over medium heat until the potatoes, peppers and onions are tender. Season with sea salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Fry the egg whites.  Heat a tablespoon of butter or cooking oil in a nonstick skillet.  Break each egg into the skillet and cook until set, flipping once.

Serve.  Divide the hash into four servings and top each serving with a fried egg.  Serve with toast or fresh fruit, if desired

3 Things To Consider when Adding Value to Your House

If you are planning to sell your house, it may be a good idea to make updates that increase the value of your house so you can get the best resale price possible. When making these updates it’s important to consider different factors, such as which updates to make and return on investment, before moving forward with any projects. Below are the factors to consider when making updates to add value to your house.

Return on Investment

The first step to take before making any updates is to look at the potential return on investment. Research the property values in your area and find out the highest amount your house can sell for in your neighborhood. If your house is worth $250,000 and houses in your neighborhood don’t sell for more than $260,000 you’ll want to consider if renovations and updates are worth the cost and time for you to break even when selling your house. However, if your house is worth $200,000 and the average house in your neighborhood sells for $250,000 it is a good idea to make updates. Just remember to stay within budget and make sure you spend less than the difference in current and potential home value so you can turn a profit.

Get Professional Help with Updates and Renovations

While taking on a project yourself can save you money in renovation costs, it may cost you in other ways. Without knowing current trends in design, such as the most desired color palettes, you may end up not getting the value increase you desire. Consider hiring professionals to help with renovations, such as Denver interior design services and professional contractors, to ensure your updates are clean and sought-after in the market.

Choose Updates That Add the Most Value

There are certain updates that won’t add much value to your house and other updates that will have a high return on investment. Some updates to make that have a high return on investment are to landscape the yard and add attractive features, such as an outdoor kitchen or a patio with low-maintenance plants; replace major appliances in the home that give a buyer peace of mind, such as the hot water heater; do minor remodels on the kitchen and bathroom; and add low-maintenance features, such as laminate flooring.

Whether you are planning to sell your home or want to increase your home equity, following this advice will help you accomplish your goal.

How to be a Stay at Home Mom

Have you kids and left your career to become a stay at home mom? The decision is vital for you, your partner, and kids. When you decide to be a stay at home mom, you are just getting into a new world and unknown area. Yes, you have put all your dreams, your prospects, and ambitions behind to adopt a new role. Now you are seeking other’s perspectives. You have to survive with your family. It is not a matter of survival. You will thrive as a stay at home mom, and you should have specific qualities that include a positive outlook, energy, and capability to work according to preference. Moreover, you have to manage the schedules properly. In this article, the founder of NW Maids (a housecleaning service in Seattle) shares some things you should do as a stay at home mom.

Proper and timely planning

It would help if you made your working schedule at night. It is not a good idea to get up in the morning and think about the priorities. It is time to prepare breakfast for kids. You have to do different things in the early morning. Cleanliness, changing diapers, and a lot of other things! It would help if you planned about it a night before.

Take a Walkout

It would help if you got out of your house and fresh yourself. If you stay at home all along the day, you may get sick. It would be best if you did not make a mess. Just leave home for a while and see fresh faces, plants, and everything. You should go to the market and buy necessities.

Recognize the power

You have made a choice, and it has some reasons. You decided for yourself and your loved ones that you are taking a new role. You should know what your expectations are. You will go through the ins and outs and have some ups and downs. If you are capable of reframing your outlook, you may overcome the harsh realities. You now have power and control. You are now the boss of your home.

Identify a task you may delegate

Being a stay at home, mom does not mean you have to do every household chore. You may do some jobs on your own and may delegate some responsibilities. You may spend a lot of time on an essential task. You may take care of your baby. You may hire services for other jobs; you may hire a house cleaning service to clean your home. You may ask the delivery service to deliver items at your home. There are some tasks you may delegate, like housekeeping, cleaning, and laundry.

Be a part of a supportive community

You are not isolated at home. You are raising children--but you are not alone in this role. There are stay at home mom groups online or in your area that you may join to share your experiences and problems. You will surely get a solution. In this way, you may have a positive mindset, and you may thrive instead of merely surviving.

Cooking for One: Spinach & Mushroom Breakfast Scramble

I am great about cooking fresh, healthy breakfasts for the family--even when our days have crazy staggered starts and quirky schedules!  Unfortunately, I am NOT so great about taking the time to make my own healthy meals for just myself.  I will grab a bagel or a granola bar--or even last night's dinner leftovers to avoid making one more meal and cleaning one more pan!  Over the past few months, I have been making a very conscious effort to change this--and finding quick, easy recipes is the only way I accomplish it every day!  This spinach and mushroom breakfast scramble recipe takes, literally, less than 10 minutes....probably about 8 minutes from start to finish. I can spare 8 minutes for a "real" breakfast instead of a boxed, processed meal!  This recipe serves one--but, if you need to make a scramble for a crowd, just multiply the ingredients and it works perfectly!

Breakfast egg scramble with fresh spinach and mushrooms

Ingredients for my Spinach & Mushroom Breakfast Scramble

2 Tsp. Coconut Oil or Butter
2 Large White Mushrooms, Chopped (about 1/3 cup)
1 tbsp. Yellow Onion, Finely Diced
A Handful of Baby Spinach--Torn with Stems Removed
Garlic Herb Seasoning Blend
2 Eggs or an Equivalent amount of Egg Whites or an Egg Substitute
Salt and Pepper, to taste

Instructions for your Spinach & Mushroom Breakfast Scramble

Saute the veggies. In a small frying pan, heat the butter or oil until hot--but not smoking. I generally melt the coconut oil or add the olive oil and spread it with a pastry brush to cover the pan. Add the onions and saute for 3-4 minutes or until nearly translucent. Add the mushrooms and saute for an additional 3-4 minutes. Toss in the spinach and saute until the spinach wilts. Add the Garlic Herb Spice Blend and stir.

Pinnable image for a spinach & mushroom breakfast scramble recipe

Scramble in the eggs. That is all there is to it. Once the veggies cook through--add in the eggs and scramble them over medium-low heat until set. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Serve. I recently cut most of the cheese and bread from my diet--but, if you prefer--toss in a couple of tablespoons of shredded mozzarella cheese or crumbled feta before serving! I am addicted to El Yucateco xxxtra Hot Habanero Sauce these days--and find myself adding it to egg dishes a lot! Serve with toast and fresh fruit.

About the Book

Yummy Me Feels So Good isn't just another story book. It is something you can use with your kids and grandkids for many years. Simple and childlike, kids identify with the gentle creatures within. Absolutely beautiful, Yummy Me is a genius way of helping children immediately connect with the world of emotions through enchanting animal friends. The images and words are so simple and therefore can be grasped by children and adults of all ages. The book can easily open up space for a dialogue about emotions between an adult and a child, all the while being playfully disguised as animal talk. Children laugh and grimace as they flip through the pages, mirroring the emotions they feel on the pages. Yummy Me is a great doorway to explore the sometimes difficult arena of emotions, both for children, teachers and parents.

Rather than labeling certain emotions as "good" or "bad", these emotions simply get space to be as they are, and encourage the reader to remember that they too will pass. The final message of the book that we are in fact "none of these" me's is a loving reminder that at any moment we can start our day again from joy. "I have seen firsthand how taking out this book can transform a child's tantrum into a smile and eventually bursts of laughter.

My Review

Yummy Me Feels So Good offers a fun way for families to talk about emotions and feelings.  Especially today, and my house is no exception; we seem to run an entire course of emotions within a very short time--sometimes within an hour! We run from happy to sad to mad to happy and peace-filled to anger-filled. This easy to read children's book offers short, fun to read pages with bright, bold words and illustrations that help the author convey emotions and messages to readers. As the animals show readers emotions--the author can express the many different feelings we feel from moment to moment. The book is a great starting point for young children and their caregivers to discuss emotions and develop an understanding and an acceptance of those feelings.

The Book Has a Simple Story--But, a Big Message for Children.  Learning to self regulate emotions--and show sympathy and empathy are essential skills for little ones! With so many changes in our world today, children (and adults) have had "normal days" disrupted or wholly dismantled! These changes have been hard to understand at times. The new normal has been even more challenging to accept and move forward from for so many people. This book gives readers a way to identify feelings through cute animals and simple prose--and learn to find their "yummy" feeling too!

Would I Recommend Yummy Me Feels So Good by Lion I Am? Emotions are complicated--and can be scary and confusing for children--especially without having "names" or visual images for their feelings. I love simple books that offer families, caregivers, and teachers learning opportunities through fun visuals and easy to understand perspectives. This book is an excellent book for families seeking to help young children put feelings into words--and some self-awareness and self-acceptance into practice.

Moving Beyond Anxiety Book Review

We have certainly been weathering some trying times over the past several months--as a nation, as families, as couples, and as individuals.  While the months of pandemic risk and uncertainty have certainly been difficult physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially for so many of us--they served to add even greater anxiety to those of us already struggling with challenges!  This week, I had the opportunity to read and review a very timely book:  Moving Beyond Anxiety by pastor and author David Chadwick.  Read my thoughts and learn more about this Christian based, self-help book and about the author!

About the Book

12 Ways God Can Help You Conquer Anxiety

Do you feel like a cloud of worry follows wherever you go? Do you dread the unknown? In today’s anxiety economy its raising stress levels, it’s no secret that fear is often at the root of our problems.

The key to overcoming your anxiety is found in the person of Jesus. He calls us to trust rather than despair—to “not be anxious” (Matthew 6:25), and to cast all our cares on him (1 Peter 5:7).

Author David Chadwick shares 12 ways you can overcome life’s fears and worries—all of which come straight from Scripture and include…

· focusing on faith

· praying

· caring for your health

· remembering God’s promises

· finding good teammates

· developing an eternal perspective

In Moving Beyond Anxiety, Chadwick equips readers to defeat worry and fear forever by immersing themselves in the truth of God through Scripture. He uses Scripture as a base for changing the way readers think and therefore, changing the way they feel and act. The book shares 12 ways you can overcome life’s fears and worries, including Focusing on Faith, Praying, Caring for your Health, Remembering, and Developing an Eternal Perspective.

“Here is what I believe: you are what you think,” Chadwick continues. “Whatever you mind dwells on will exacerbate emotions. It’s called cognitive therapy in psychosocial circles. Scripture confirms these ideas. Be transformed by the renewal of your MIND (Rom 12:2). Take every thought captive (2 Cor. 10:5). Therefore, to change your behavior, you must focus on your thought life. Conform your mind to God’s Word and you’ll see emotions follow. Think. Feel. Act. Win the battle for your thought life and you will win the battle over anxiety.”

My Review

Moving Beyond Anxiety offers Insights into Truth and Faith. As we face fear-filled situations and anxiety-causing events--we often dwell on fears and doubts rather than refocusing our minds and energies toward faith. This book came at the perfect time for me! While I know that when my situation and circumstances are "out of control"--I can control my own thinking--it is easy to fall into the negative, fear-filled, traps of anxiety. This book offers easy to follow reminders and tools to refocus our minds on faith through Bible passages and Biblical ideals.

The Author Shares an Easy to Read and Easy to Understand Guide for Christians. Strong, practicing Christians may find this book quite familiar as many of the teachings are those that we have likely heard frequently over time. It is perfect, however, for those of us who need some friendly, faith-filled reminders (and support) from time to time! The author's writing style offers short, easy to read chapters that, while do contain a lot of Scripture and Biblical reasoning, are presented in a very simple, easy to follow and easy to understand format.

Would I Recommend Moving Beyond Anxiety by David Chadwick? Feelings of anxiety make even enjoying everyday life difficult at times. Many of us face (and battle) feelings of anxiety, dread, self-doubt, and fear again and again throughout any given day! This book is full of timely advice and support for Christians feeling anxiety--and tips and reminders to face some of the anxiety-riddled situations through Biblical Truths and Faith. I would recommend this book to any Christian seeking a little spiritual support and some reminders in terms of faith and hope to help them through challenging times.
