I make it no secret that I love memoirs.   I love life stories--no matter the time or setting.  Today, I am sharing my review of A Journey to Yonder by Nidhi Kaur--a memoir that combines a life story with poetry.  What did I think of A Journey to Yonder?

About the Book

A Journey to Yonder is the tale of one woman’s refusal to allow the challenges of her past to define her present. She grows up with a special needs sibling and loses her childhood home, and we then follow her through an abusive relationship and into the most unforgiving of human trials.

With experiences that leave you feeling so alone, how do you hold on to hope? How do you go on?

Nidhi Kaur’s compelling use of both poetry and prose intimately welcomes readers into this moving story of spiritual rediscovery. Poems are sprinkled throughout the story, guiding readers through intimate and stunning moments of truth. Kaur reminds us that if we offer our trust completely to God, we are never alone.

The author of the spiritual collection of poetry My Wedding with Truth, Nidhi Kaur once again delivers an emotionally enlightened journey through the human heart. Miracles can be seen everywhere in this world, and Kaur helps us remember to keep our eyes open in this riveting story of redemption.

Content Rating: R (for explicit sex scenes written poetically and in good taste)

My Review

A Journey to Yonder is a spiritual, moving memoir.  It is no secret to our readers that I love memoirs.  I especially love a memoir that transports me from my life or time to another world--to the author's world, and Nidhi Kaur's story does exactly that.  The author allows readers to not only experience her story through her very personal memories--but, through her heart and soul as she shares poetry written about the various glimpses into her life.  The addition of the poems allows readers to develop a much stronger connection to the author's story and her words.

The author tells her story in a unique format.  As if the poetry is not special enough to make this novel a unique memoir--the author breaks the story into sections as well.  Most readers seem to find two distinct sections of A Journey to Yonder with the author's challenges and struggles presented in the first section--and her rebirth presented in the second section.

I felt that it was almost presented in three parts.  The challenges and struggles the author faced were presented in a way that readers from anywhere in the world could relate in the first part of the book.  The author then became reflective and shared deeper moments from her past that made her challenges more difficult in her culture and life in India--and this section really led readers from outside India to a strong emotional bond with the author and her story.  I think I saw this as a separate section because I felt that the author was trying to stop and reflect on the whys and hows of the events she faced.   The final section of the book told a story of hope building on faith and courage and light from a lifetime of darkness.  I loved the way the author told the story through her stories, her poems, her reflections and through the insights she offered into her culture and life in India.

Would I recommend A Journey to Yonder by Nidhi Kaur?  If you enjoy reading memoirs--especially those with a focus on life in another culture, I highly recommend this A Journey to Yonder.  I enjoyed the author's writing style and the spiritual flow of her stories and poetry.  Her story is one that holds darkness--but, was continuously driven toward hope and light.  The story is a quick one to read--but, offers messages that will stay with readers for some time.
